Summary

The Apprentice supports the Toolroom team in manufacturing, assembling, maintaining, and repairing production tooling for a variety of transfer presses. While completing structured on-the-job training and related technical education. The role develops safe working habits, precision workmanship, and problem-solving skills under supervision.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Your key responsibilities:

  • Assist in tool manufacture and assembly using basic machining and bench fitting techniques
  • Support tool maintenance and repair, using machinery such as lathes, milling machines and grinders to cut and shape the press tools
  • Perform measurement and inspection using hand tools and metrology equipment (e.g. callipers, micrometres, gauges)
  • Learn and apply engineering drawings, tolerances, and basic GD&T concepts
  • Help with tool trials, troubleshooting, and documenting issues and fixes
  • Maintain toolroom organisation (5S), tool control, and correct storage of equipment
  • Monitoring the tools used on the manufacturing line to ensure efficient run rates and identify necessary repairs or possible
    improvements
  • Attending machine breakdowns to identify the root cause and rectification

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
