Summary

Support the delivery and assessment of practical grounds maintenance training for young people and learners. The apprentice will assist in multi-skilled grounds work including pitch care, landscaping, and site upkeep, while mentoring learners, supporting practical tasks, and helping develop confidence, teamwork, and work-ready skills.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Assist with grounds maintenance across the site (grass cutting, line marking, upkeep)
  • Support preparation and maintenance of sports pitch and outdoor areas
  • Carry out landscaping, gardening, and general site improvement work
  • Use and maintain grounds equipment safely (under supervision)
  • Help prepare tools and materials for daily tasks
  • Ensure outdoor areas are safe, clean, and well presented
  • Work alongside staff on practical grounds projects
  • Mentor and support young learners while they take part in grounds maintenance tasks
  • Encourage teamwork, responsibility, and safe working practices
  • Assist in observing and recording learner progress in practical activities
  • Support basic assessment evidence (photos, checklists, task completion)

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Conduct sustainable assessment practice working within organisational, legal, and ethical frameworks, including confidentiality and safeguarding.
  • Produce a plan for assessment.
  • Select method(s) to assess learner(s) in line with organisational and regulatory requirements.
  • Make accurate assessment judgments against agreed standards.
  • Communicate with learner and relevant stakeholders to support assessment practice.
  • Provide constructive feedback to support the learner to progress.
  • Contribute to standardisation, moderation and quality assurance procedures.
  • Develop and maintain records of assessment, complying with quality, confidentiality and data protection requirements.
  • Facilitate access to relevant, current information advice and guidance.
  • Apply holistic assessment in practice to support wider skills development.
  • Identify and implement professional development opportunities to maintain occupational competency, including sustainable practice and digital literacy.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

English (grade 6/D)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Good knowledge or understanding of grounds maintenance, sports pitch care, or landscaping

Previous hands-on experience (work, volunteering, or personal) is essential
Willingness to work towards a relevant vocational or assessor qualification

Grounds person or Sports Turf Operative 
Site Maintenance or Facilities Assistant
Senior Grounds Operative or Team Leader
Construction or Grounds Tutor (with further experience)
Vocational Assessor supporting apprentices or learners
Progression to Level 3 or higher qualifications in Sports Turf, Horticulture, or Teaching/Assessing
Learners will also gain transferable skills in teamwork, communication, mentoring, and work readiness, supporting progression into wider employment or further training.
