Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

On a day-to-day basis as an apprentice, you will be doing the following:

  • Hands-on Installation: Work alongside senior fitters to learn the full process of removing old units and precisely installing high-quality uPVC, aluminium, and timber windows and doors.
  • Precision Finishing: Master the "art" of the trade by applying silicone seals, fitting internal trims, and ensuring every job meets a perfect aesthetic standard.
  • Technical Measuring: Develop accuracy in measuring, preparing openings, and checking levels to ensure a seamless fit for every component.
  • Tool & Component Mastery: Gain confidence using specialised manual and power tools while building a deep understanding of various window and door components.
  • Logistics & Maintenance: Take responsibility for loading, unloading, and transporting materials while ensuring all tools and equipment are kept in excellent working order.
  • Workspace Standards: Maintain a clean, organised site and perform general duties to ensure a smooth, efficient workflow from start to finish.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to strict Health and Safety regulations and building codes to protect yourself, the team, and the customer’s property.
  • Documentation: Complete all required company paperwork and installation logs accurately in line with official procedures.
  • Customer Relations: Act as a polite, professional brand ambassador, ensuring a tidy environment and a positive experience for every client.
  • Marketing Support: Capture photos of installations at various stages to assist with the company’s social media presence and marketing portfolio.
  • Career Development: Actively participate in training sessions and work toward formal qualifications to advance your skills in the industry.

  • Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
  • Select, check and use hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Move, handle and store materials, including loading and unloading of vehicles.
  • Identify, install and remove temporary support requirements.
  • Remove existing fenestration products.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance, recycling and disposal.
  • Read and interpret information from manufacturers guidance and other sources, for example from drawings, specifications, digital documents or work instructions.
  • Prepare the frame for installation for example handles, hinges, locks, hardware, trickle vents or frame extensions.
  • Position and fix the frame in the opening ensuring level, plumb and square.
  • Position and install sashes.
  • Position and install, glazing and any infill materials into the frame.
  • Measure, cut, drill and fix trims.
  • Apply external seals for moisture and air penetration. For example, wet sealants, tapes, membranes and any associated products.
  • Interim inspection work and rectify or report any work that is incorrect or incomplete.
  • Complete final inspections and workplace documentation.
  • Complete a customer or site manager handover.
  • Check and use working at height equipment for example steps, ladders, hop-ups, and podiums.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning opportunities and development activities.
  • Carry out internal and external finishing for example making good any damage, priming, sealing, trimmings, mouldings, backer rod or foam, scribing, trimmings, flashings, perimeter pressings and cladding.
  • Prepare openings for installation.

Training schedule

All aspects of your training will be delivered on-site with your employer.

 

  • Earn While You Learn: All your training takes place during your normal working hours—and you get paid for every minute of it.
  • Mentoring: Most of your week is spent on-site with an expert mentor who will show you exactly how to install windows, doors, and glass safely and professionally.
  • Dedicated Study Time: We set aside specific hours each week just for you to focus on your coursework, online learning, and workbooks.
  • Expert Support: You’ll have an assigned Assessor who visits you on-site at least every 10 weeks to check your progress and give you feedback.
  • Flexible Learning: You can choose the style that fits you best, either a full day of training every 10 weeks or "bite-sized" 2-hour sessions every month.
  • All of this leads to your Fenestration Installer Level 2 qualification, giving you a massive head start and the professional credentials to build a great career in the trade.

Although our industry specialty is in the delivery of Fenestration Training, our assessors are each skilled in their own specialist discipline.
  • This is a mentor-led qualification based entirely at your workplace. You will develop your skills and behaviours alongside your mentor on-site or at your workstation, with no college days and no additional travel required.
  • Our assessors provide expert support through classroom sessions, site visits, and observations. We adapt to your schedule: whether you prefer a full day of learning every 10 weeks or "bite-sized" 2-hour sessions every month for knowledge work, our support is built around individual progress to ensure you are fully prepared for your Apprenticeship Assessment.
  • To support your growth, a set number of hours within your standard working week will be dedicated to learning and studying, ensuring your qualification is achieved entirely within your professional hours.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

Maths & English (grade A*- C / 9 - 4)

Other requirements

  • Please be aware we work outside as well as inside on our jobs as they demand, as such you may be out in the cold for long periods of time.
  • The work can also be physically quite demanding so please consider this before applying.

  • Ideally have a Full clean driving licence or working towards one.
