Summary

As an apprentice, you will work with experienced fitters to learn how to assemble, install and maintain bespoke road repair machinery. You will support new machine builds for our fleet and customers, and assist with maintaining company vehicles to keep them safe, reliable and operational.

£15,392 to £24,454.04, depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work


Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Carry out tasks allocated by the Workshop Supervisor
  • Work alongside the wider workshop team to learn problem solving techniques
  • Support the integration of machinery onto HGV vehicles
  • Support general workshop housekeeping and maintenance
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and basic fault finding
  • Assist with the assembly of new road repair machinery
  • Learn how to use hand tools, basic marking out, drilling and light grinding techniques
  • Learn how to test, repair and replace components safely
  • Develop skills and knowledge with the aim of progressing into a qualified Mechanical Assembly Fitter role

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training schedule

Your first year will be spent at Seta in Washington.

Your second year will be spent 4 days in the workplace with Velocity and 1 day with Seta on day release.

Your final 2 years will be spent full time with the employer, with regular reviews with a Seta apprenticeship manager and your employer.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

4 subjects, including Maths and English (grade 4-9)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

  • A strong interest in engineering or manufacturing
  • Interest in engines, hydraulics, pneumatics or vehicle systems
  • Willingness to learn and develop practical mechanical skills
  • Willingness to learn about vehicle electrical systems and installation
  • Basic understanding of tools or mechanical systems (from education, hobbies or work experience)
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely
  • Good communication skills and a positive, flexible attitude
  • UK driving licence (desirable but not essential)
  • Commit to attending college at least one day per week for day release training (from year 2 onwards)
