Summary

Gateway Housing are looking for an Apprentice Multi-trader to support the maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of social housing properties across East London. The post holder will gain hands-on experience in key disciplines such as plumbing, carpentry, plastering, tiling, and general property maintenance.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Interact respectfully and professionally with tenants while supporting repair works. Learn to manage communication with residents and represent the organisation in a positive manner.
  • Assist skilled operatives with the maintenance and repair of residential properties, shadowing experienced tradespeople and gradually taking on tasks under supervision.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and classroom-based learning to develop trade skills and knowledge. Complete all required coursework, assessments, and practical evaluations for the apprenticeship qualification.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Learn to identify hazards and report risks to supervisors promptly.
  • Engage fully with all aspects of the apprenticeship programme, including on-the-job training and off-site learning. Complete coursework, attend training sessions, and meet all milestones and deadlines set by the training provider.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Plan the sequence of work required to carry out routine property maintenance operations.
  • Identify and select the appropriate materials and components for property maintenance tasks, ensuring these are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Comply with statutory health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Comply with risk assessments, and organise the workplace, to safeguard themselves and the property.
  • Comply with key regulatory and legislative requirements, including building regulations.
  • Uses safe working practices when carrying out property maintenance tasks including the use of PPE, signage, barriers, access equipment and ensuring work area is prepared and reinstated.
  • Select, and use work tools and equipment for property maintenance tasks, applying all safeguards, and ensuring the correct functioning of equipment.
  • Safely isolate and secure electrical or electronic supplies prior to performing property maintenance operations.
  • Apply and implement routine emergency system checks, testing and routine maintenance, identifying and reporting faults as required.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to plumbing systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components and clearing blockages.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to external drainage systems, including clearing blockages and replacing components.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to environmental and energy management systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components.
  • Use carpentry and joinery skills to perform repairs to windows, doors and glazing units, and their associated fittings.
  • Perform repairs to plastered surfaces, including surface preparation, fixing and mixing materials and compounds.
  • Use painting and decorating skills to prepare surfaces for decoration, apply paint using brushes and rollers, and complete sealing activities using gun appliances.
  • Perform tiling repairs, including setting out, surface preparation and cutting around obstacles.
  • Perform flooring repairs, including setting out, surface preparation and cutting around obstacles.
  • Perform planned, responsive or temporary repairs to buildings or their immediate surroundings, attending to minor defects within either masonry, roofing, fencing or railing, groundwork or landscaping.
  • Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address property maintenance problems.
  • Record and report information, using digital and written techniques.
  • Inspect own work, ensuring it is delivered to the given specifications.
  • Comply with environmental regulations and procedures. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Use and adapt communication methods for different situations and when, working with colleagues and stakeholders, using industry terminology as appropriate.
  • Provide customer feedback whilst maintaining customer service.
  • Escalates issues beyond their level of competence and authority.

Training schedule

This apprenticeship is delivered as a day release, you will be required to attend college once a week.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4 / C or above)
  • Maths (grade 4 / C or above)

  • Basic awareness of what maintenance or building work involves e.g., what a carpenter or plumber does, and an understanding that the job involves manual, physical work.
  • Some familiarity with common hand tools (e.g., screwdrivers, hammers) and materials used in property maintenance (e.g., paint, plaster, timber), even if just from school or home experience.

Desirable:

  • An introductory knowledge of what different trades involve (e.g., knowing the difference between plastering and rendering, or understanding how plumbing systems work at a high level).
  • Awareness of terms like “risk assessment,” “manual handling,” or “COSHH” (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), even if only studied at school.
  • Any hands-on experience (e.g., from Design & Technology classes, helping with home repairs, or volunteer/community work involving tools or property improvement)

Experience

Essential:

  • Some exposure to practical tasks e.g., assembling furniture, helping with home repairs, or doing basic DIY activities even in a non-professional setting.
  • Any experience working in a team on physical or hands-on tasks such as school projects, volunteer activities, or sports, showing the ability to follow instructions and collaborate.
  • Any role where the applicant has had to deal with the public, such as part-time retail work or helping at community events, to demonstrate good communication and professionalism.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a customer-facing role or dealing with members of the public.
  • Awareness of health and safety practices in a work or learning environment.
  • Familiarity with working in or around social housing or community-focused projects.
