The primary focus of the Engineering Apprentice is to support the business in the engineering, design, documentation and manufacturing of fire and gas detection systems. This can include multiple areas of engineering, including instrumentation, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and more.

Work

What you'll do at work
The tasks and responsibilities below are typical of the duties the postholder will be expected to perform.
Calibrations:
Learning and understanding the processes involved in the calibration of gas detection and impairment technologies
Stock control:
Learning and understanding stock control practices, how to allocate stock to production orders and how to check stock
Work safely:
Learn how to maintain safe working practices using risk assessments and HazObs to ensure potential hazards are mitigated and managed for a secure work environment
Promote continuous improvement:
Learn basic Lean Six Sigma principles to support an ongoing culture of continuous improvement, innovation, efficiency and excellence across all parts of the business
Technical drawings:
Learning to read, understand and use mechanical assembly, piping schematic and electrical wiring in manufacturing activities
Manufacturing:
Learn and understand how to build instrumentation control panels; preparing cable harnesses, working with small gauge tubing using nylon, PTFE and Stainless Steel; using hand tools for mechanical fitting and for electrical assemblies

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
- Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
- Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
- Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
- Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
- Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
- Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
- Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
- Reporting work outcomes or issues.
- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
- Operating within limits of responsibility.
- Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training schedule
- Workplace-based learning with experienced panel builders.
- Off-the-job training and classroom learning with an approved training provider
- Development of both electrical and practical skills as well as workplace skills such as communication, problem-solving, and health & safety awareness
- Study towards the appropriate apprenticeship standard for an electrical panel wiring / engineering manufacturing technician

At the Blyth factory, a key activity is the design and manufacture of safety equipment, particularly breathing apparatus used by firefighters, emergency services, industrial workers and the military.
