Summary

Voyage Care are looking for a new Support Worker Apprentice. You will be studying toward your Adult Care Worker Level 2. You will assist with daily living activities, learn essential care skills, and contribute to creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere within our service whilst gaining a recognised qualification in health and social care.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As an Apprentice within Voyage Care, a leading care provider specialising in supporting adults with physical and learning disabilities, you will work alongside experienced care professionals to deliver compassionate, person-centred support to individuals with complex care needs. This apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a rewarding sector, supporting people to live fulfilling and independent lives in a safe and nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communicating with people we support with learning disabilities using appropriate communication methods, including tact, empathy and diplomacy to foster good relationships. This may include using specialist communication methods for which the company would provide training
  • Once suitably trained assist with people we support care, including personal care, while being appropriately supervised
  • Assisting with bathing to maintain a high standard of hygiene. This may include people moving techniques, using hoists and repositioning service users as required
  • Participating in the development and implementation of people we support’s care plans to encourage people we support to take an active role in all aspects of daily living and ensure the appropriate level of individual care and support is provided
  • Participating in people we support daily outings, activities or recreational pursuits when required to assist people we support with aspects of their daily life
  • Undertaking and/or assisting people we support with household activities such as cooking, mealtimes, laundering and cleaning to promote a healthy environment for the service users and the promotion of independent living
  • Recording and completing any appropriate documentation to ensure that per records, observations or research results are accurate and informative
  • Handling cash daily, e.g. grocery shopping, general household errands and service users’ monies to facilitate the appropriate management of service users’ finances
  • Undertaking and completing the Apprenticeship Programme within an agreed timescale, including the induction criteria specified by the Education and Skills Funding Agency
  • Undertaking any other training relevant to the needs of the service and the people we support according to relevant legislation to professionally develop and gain skills beneficial to the service users
  • Ensuring all policies and procedures applicable in the service and the company are followed to comply with regulations and good practice
  • Attending, participating and contributing to team meetings when required to ensure that all issues relating to the management of the service are fully understood, and to promote communication within the team

  • Use the preferred methods of communication of the individual they support according to their language, culture, sensory needs and their wishes
  • Identify and take steps to reduce environmental barriers to communication
  • Demonstrate they can check for understanding
  • Write clearly and concisely in records and reports
  • Keep information safe and confidential according to agreed ways of working
  • Recognise potential signs of different forms of abuse
  • Respond to concerns of abuse according to agreed ways of working
  • Recognise, report and challenge unsafe practices
  • Promote the health and wellbeing of the individual they support
  • Move people and objects safely
  • Demonstrate how to reduce the spread of infection, including use of best practice in hand hygiene
  • Demonstrate the promotion of healthy eating and wellbeing by ensuring individuals have access to fluids, food and nutrition
  • Demonstrate how to keep people, buildings and themselves safe and secure
  • Carry out fire safety procedures when required
  • Use risk assessments to support individuals safely
  • Recognise symptoms of cognitive impairment, e.g. Dementia, learning disabilities and mental health
  • Monitor and report changes in health and wellbeing for individuals they support
  • Reflect on your own work practices
  • Demonstrate the development of their own skills and knowledge, including core skills in writing, numbers and information technology
  • Demonstrate their contribution to their development plan
  • Demonstrate ability to work in partnership with others to support the individual
  • Identify sources of support when conflicts arise with other people or organisations
  • Demonstrate they can work within safe, clear professional boundaries
  • Show they can access and apply additional skills required to perform the specific job role competently
