Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Always working safely, following health & safety and environmental legislation
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, adhering to specified dimensions and tolerances
- Rotate through production department to support your learning in Metal Fabrication.
- Use a wide variety of precision measuring equipment
- Using testing equipment for quality checks
- Monitor and maintain machinery for efficiency
- Diagnose machine or tool malfunctions and determine required adjustments or repairs
- Communicate and engage effectively with colleagues and stakeholders
- Work inclusively with your team and across the wider organisation
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement
- Attend careers or STEM events to support young people’s futures.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
- Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
- Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
- Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
- Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
- Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
- Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
- Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
- Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
- Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
- Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
- Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
- Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
- Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
- Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

Training schedule
Main Location will be Bridmet, Gore Cross Business Park, Bridport, DT6 3UX, however may also be requested to work at Pymore Mills, Bridport, DT65PJ.
Year 1:
- Attend college on designated days to complete a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing
- Rotate through key departments, including Profiling, Material Preparation, Paint Line, Quality, and Press Stud
Years 2 & 3:
- Continue at college on designated days to progress with your Level 2 Diploma
- Rotate through additional departments, such as Design & Production Planning, Mechanical Build, Acoustic Assembly, Machining, Folding, Welding, Electropolishing, and Shot Blasting
- Begin building your workplace portfolio for the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
- Explore and discuss areas of specialisation, based on your skills, interests, and performance
Year 4:
- Join your chosen department as your area of specialisation
- Complete your End Point Assessment for the Metal Fabrication Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship training is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular college attendance.
This training will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the Level 3 Metal Fabrication Apprenticeship (Apprenticeship Standard Ref: ST0607) standard.
On completion the apprentice will receive Level 3 Metal Fabrication Apprenticeship (Apprenticeship Standard Ref: ST0607).

Other requirements
You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. In some cases, you may be required to have a telephone interview with Yeovil College prior to your application being passed on.
