What you'll do at work
About the Role As a Leisure Team Member Apprentice, you’ll play a vital role in supporting, enhancing, and delivering the daily operations of our leisure and fitness facilities.
Working as part of a dynamic team, you’ll be involved in a variety of tasks including:
- Assisting with opening and closing procedures
- Maintaining equipment and ensuring a clean, safe environment
- Delivering programmed activities and customer services
Your role will cover five key areas:
- Leisure and fitness operations
- Lifeguard duties
- Swimming Teacher duties
- Fitness Instructor duties
- Leading group activities Essential Requirement - NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification)
- All applicants must hold a valid NPLQ before starting employment
If you do not currently hold this qualification, you must successfully complete the course before joining us.
NPLQ courses must be arranged through Fusion’s Training Team or an approved external provider (self-funded). Your First Role: Full-Time Lifeguard (Recreation Assistant)
In your initial placement, you will:
- Ensure customer safety in and around the pool
- Provide constant poolside supervision and emergency response
- Assist with activities, events, and pool water testing
- Support the cleanliness and upkeep of the facility
- Deliver excellent customer service as part of a professional team Apprenticeship Development
As part of your Level 2 Leisure Team Member Apprenticeship, you will gain practical experience and achieve nationally recognised qualifications, including:
- STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming
- Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction
- Level 3 First Aid at Work
You’ll also build vital skills in customer service, teamwork, and leadership. Apprenticeship Delivery This apprenticeship is structured around a 30 hour working week, including both your practical role and off-the-job training.
Your 20% off-the-job training will be delivered by Creative Sport & Leisure, through:

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Work in a team to support peers and colleagues to meet the goals of the business.
- Communicate (written, verbal) accurately and effectively and in line with legal requirements. E.g. Information on products and accident reporting procedures.
- Undertake the operational housekeeping of the leisure facility. For example, assembling, dismantling, routine maintenance and storage of equipment. Cleaning tasks. Opening and closing procedures, including evacuation. Safe set up of equipment and activities.
- Monitor customer use of equipment and ensure their safety, intervening as necessary.
- Comply with the legal requirements to ensure the safety, security and well-being of all colleagues and customers within the facility, such as Equality Act, HSE Act, COSHH, RIDDOR, Safeguarding and Protecting Children, Data Protection, BSI and European guidelines relevant to the environment, first aid regulations.
- Use IT including front of house system, social media and digital channels.
- Perform all the duties of a swimming teacher including; delivering swimming lessons that develop water confidence, core aquatic skills, safety and technical skills across a range of participants of different abilities from non swimmer to advanced. Promoting and raising awareness of swimming opportunities. Supervising and leading swimming teachers assistants.
- Perform the duties of a lifeguard including; working as part of a team to provide safe supervision of swimmers and prevent accidents. How to intervien providing rescues and life saving techniques when necessary.
- Perform all of the duties of a gym instructor; including; conducting, gym inductions, client consultations, assessment and review and health screening. Use underpinning knowledge of anatomy, physiology, human movement and biomechanics and applying fitness training techniques. Planning, reviewing and delivering safe and effective gym based exercise programmes with individuals and small groups.
- Plan activity sessions using techniques that are suitable for the participant(s) and their goals.
- Undertake pre-activity screening and health and safety checks when leading group sessions/classes.
- Lead groups using appropriate communication methods and instructing styles and apply suitable group management techniques when instructing participants.
Training schedule
The apprentice will receive full on the job training, as well as 20% off the job training from the employer, they will also receive a wraparound service from SCL
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- Maths (grade 4)
- English (grade 4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
In order to be considered for a Lifeguard position at Fusion Lifestyle, you need to be a strong swimmer, and have excellent customer service skills.
You should also have:
- A UK recognised pool lifeguard qualification
- Understanding of relevant health and safety legislation
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to appropriately correct behaviour of pool users where necessary
- A high standard of physical fitness
- Confidence and an approachable nature
