Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assisting scaffolders with the erection and dismantling of scaffolding
- Loading and unloading scaffold materials
- Handling, sorting, and moving tubes, fittings, boards, and equipment
- Maintaining a clean and safe working environment
- Following health & safety regulations at all times
- Supporting the team to ensure work is completed efficiently and on schedule
- Pick up points in various locations
- Physically fit and capable of manual handling
- Ability to work at height and in all weather conditions
- Punctual, reliable, and able to work as part of a team
- Willingness to travel to different sites if required- vans provided

Our Foundation Apprenticeship has been carefully designed to support learners who are intending to progress into the scaffolding industry onto a full Scaffolding Apprenticeship. While the Onsite Trade Foundation Apprenticeship pathway will be delivered through a Bricklaying pathway, the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed align strongly with the practical and technical requirements of scaffolding roles.
In addition to the Level 2 Onsite Trade Foundation qualification, learners will gain the following qualifications.
In-House Scaffolding Awareness course valid for 3 years:
- CISRS COTS New Entrant course
- In-House Working at Height course valid for 3 years
- In-House Harness Awareness course valid for 3 years
The bricklaying pathway has been selected because it provides an excellent foundation for understanding the environments and materials that scaffolders work with every day. Many of the core principles taught directly support safe, effective and professional scaffolding practice, including:
- Understanding of structural materials, scaffolding bases are typically founded on brickwork, blockwork or concrete
- Learners develop knowledge of material strength, durability, load-bearing capacity, Newton’s forces and load displacement
- This understanding supports safer scaffold erection and informed decision-making on site
- Ties, fixings and structural stability
- Scaffold structures are commonly tied into surrounding buildings to prevent movement caused by wind or load transfer. The Bricklaying pathway introduces learners to different construction materials and how they respond to fixings
- This directly links to understanding tie types, tie patterns and the importance of testing (e.g. testing 1 in 5 ties) to ensure structural integrity
- Making good and site professionalism
- Damage to existing structures following scaffold removal is a common concern for scaffolding employers and clients
- Learners gain practical experience in repairing and “making good” brickwork and masonry, helping to reduce complaints, protect company reputation and improve client satisfaction
- Employability at the Core
- Alongside technical learning, the Foundation Apprenticeship is strongly aligned to employability and readiness for work in construction, helping employers access young people who understand site expectations from day one
Learners develop:
- Health and safety awareness relevant to construction and scaffolding environments
- An understanding of site behaviour, teamwork and communication
- Timekeeping, reliability and personal responsibility
- A positive attitude towards learning, feedback and progression
- Insight into construction careers, including scaffolding as a progression route
