Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Apprentice Quantity Surveyors will assist in the following areas:

  • Prepare estimates, cost plans, undertake interim evaluations, cost reports and value for money reports
  • Procurement advice
  • Tender document preparation
  • Tender reporting
  • Contract administration and cost control
  • Valuations and final accounts
  • Contract and dispute advice
  • Employer’s Agent / Contract Administrator services
  • Attend meetings and undertake site visits
  • Prepare agendas, minutes and supporting documents for meetings

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Be able to apply and evaluate the principles for the avoidance of conflict and dispute resolution such as adjudication and arbitration between project stakeholders
  • Be able to identify and manage risks of health, safety and welfare in line with legislation, hazards and safe systems of work
  • Analyse costs and benefits of sustainability initiatives on a project
  • Be able to advise on the legal aspects of a project and the most suitable form of contract to be used to ensure fairness and efficiency
  • Be able to advise on the most suitable construction solutions that maximise value for clients and enhance the cost effectiveness of the project within the budget constraints
  • Be able to advise on the appropriateness of various procurement routes and manage and report on the tendering and negotiation processes to select specialist contractors
  • Advise on appropriate methods of measurement of completed works and issue documentation required for payment to specialist contractors and income from client
  • Advise construction team and the client on strategies to control predicted expenditure in line with the budget
  • Carry out risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate risk
  • Monitor, report and advise construction team on project cashflows and profitability. Evaluate and advise on financial implications of decisions during the construction phase
  • Assess, interpret and report on progress and assist in the control of programmes during the construction phase

Training schedule

  • You will follow the Quantity Surveyor and Project Management Degree Apprentice Standard
  • The majority of your tuition will be on-line via the University College of Estate Management, and you’ll be expected to study elements of your degree during time at work
  • Whilst at work you will be assigned a mentor, who will guide and support you through your day-to-day work activities; they will also support you to attain the knowledge, skills and behaviour that will help you achieve your apprenticeship

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English Language (grade 4 to 9 (A* to C))
  • Mathematics (grade 4 to 9 (A* to C))

A Level in:

Any Subject (x 3) (grade C or above)

T Level in:

Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning (grade Merit or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

  • We are looking for a long-term relationship with our apprentices and we have a long-term career structure in mind, whereby we see the apprentice developing into senior roles within our business as it grows
  • With this in mind, successful apprentices will be offered permanent contracts at the end of the 60 months
