Summary

The role will provide experience in tree pruning, felling and safety practices, as well as specialised techniques for maintaining healthy trees and managing woodland areas. You will work with a dedicated team experienced in sustainable tree management and conservation, ensuring the long-term health of the estate’s trees.

£14,918.80 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

● Assisting the estate manager with the preparation of maintenance schedules.

● Maintaining the owner’s house and immediate grounds to the highest standard, undertaking of maintenance work across all properties on the estate including multiple self-catering properties and the activities centre, fishing hut and grounds.

● Ensuring that outside areas across the estate including gardens, car parks, footpaths are maintained to the highest standards.

● Assisting in maintaining the estate’s grounds and woodland.

● Learning to use and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and effectively.

● Supporting seasonal planting, pruning, and landscaping projects.

● Helping prepare the estate grounds for weddings and events.

● Taking initiative to spot and solve problems before they arise.

● Working as part of a team while developing your own independence and confidence.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Recognise health and safety needs onsite and work safely
  • Complete site-specific risk assessments and emergency action plans
  • Select appropriate equipment for tree work operations
  • Set out workplace signage (highway & non highway) and assists with traffic control
  • Process tree work arisings using appropriate machinery
  • Maintain and take appropriate care of tools, equipment and other onsite factors (such as customer or public buildings etc.)
  • Recognise a variety of tree species using common names
  • Carry out a range of formative pruning operations
  • Carry out branch removal up to 200mm diameter with hand tools (target pruning for final cut).
  • Fell and process small trees up to 380mm diameter.
  • Support aerial tree workers with transfer of equipment for aerial tree work operations
  • Perform an aerial rescue of colleague from a rope and harness
  • Work safely at height in the tree under supervision
  • Communicate technical information about arboricultural operations to fellow team members, clients and other stakeholders as required.

Training schedule

Training will be delivered by Myerscough College where you will work towards the Level 2 Arborist Apprenticeship qualification. This will include Functional Skills if required.

Delivery is work-based with college attendance approximately once a month for specialist technical workshops and seminars. College attendance will count towards the 20% off the job training requirement.

The following licence to practice qualifications are also included in the apprenticeship:

● Level 2 award in emergency first aid at work

● Level 2 award in safe use of brushwood chipper

● Traffic Management (NRSWA Unit 002 Signing, Lighting and Guarding) OR Sector Scheme 12D

● Level 2 award in chainsaw maintenance

● Level 2 award in crosscutting timber using a chainsaw

● Level 2 award in felling and processing trees up to 380mm

● Level 2 award in accessing a tree using a rope and harness

● Level 3 award in aerial tree rescue operations

● Level 3 award in aerial cutting of trees using free fall techniques

● Level 2 award in safe use of mobile elevated work platform

● Level 3 award in use of a chainsaw from a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) The end point assessment will contain 4 components:

● Holistic project

● Online multiple-choice knowledge tests

● Practical Tests

● Structured Interview

There will be 2 levels of achievement: Pass & Distinction

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • 2 others subjects (grade 2-9/E-A*)
  • English (grade 2-9/E-A*)
  • Maths (grade 2-9/E-A*)

Other requirements

Edenhall is a 10 minute drive from Penrith train station, and junction 40 off the M6. There is also a bus stop in Edenhall village, with services to other local villages, Carlisle and Penrith.

You will be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Being comfortable with working at height.
