Two apprenticeship posts are available for a rare chance to start a career as a skilled & qualified Learning and Skills Mentor supporting 11-16 year olds at City of Leicester College. You’ll support pastoral care and teaching & learning across the school, working with some of the school’s most vulnerable students.

Please note the salary stated is based on a full time 52 week a year basis, however this role is working 40 weeks so your actual salary is £17,977.60 based on £449.44 per week x 40 and spread across 12 months.

The role and what you’ll do:
- Provide one-to-one and small-group mentoring to support students’ behaviour and learning so they can access the curriculum
- Help pupils with Special Educational Needs integrate and progress successfully
- Plan and use strategies in class, playgrounds and communal areas to support individuals and groups
- Ensure every pupil has a consistent, positive experience with the mentoring team
- Keep accurate records of mentoring sessions and share information with appropriate staff when needed
- Support pupils through transitions (e.g., returning to class, moving year groups)
- Work with under-achieving pupils and their families/carers to improve access to learning
- Model and maintain a calm, polite and respectful ethos in line with the college behaviour policy
- Support teaching staff when required and provide strategies for pupils to maintain/improve behaviour on return to lessons
- Uphold confidentiality and data protection (GDPR) at all times
- Carry out other reasonable duties as required (e.g., first aid, trips/events, cover for absent staff)

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Conduct sustainable mentoring practice within organisational and professional boundaries, and legal and ethical requirements, including safeguarding
- Establish and maintain mentoring contracts with mentees and where relevant, other stakeholders
- Conduct mentoring sessions according to agreed plans
- Implement established mentoring tools and techniques to help the mentee work towards agreed outcomes
- Maintain records of mentoring practice, complying with quality, confidentiality and data protection requirements
- Establish and use assessed starting points to establish agreed outcomes of the mentoring process
- Assess and review progress and achievement of agreed outcomes and revise action plans as appropriate
- Maintain mentoring relationship through a non-judgemental and objective approach
- Use questioning techniques to encourage reflection and progression
- Provide feedback to the mentee to inform progression
- Inform, advise and guide the mentee to support development toward agreed outcomes
- Apply theories and models of evaluation and reflection to support mentee development
- Monitor and reflect on own mentoring practice, including feedback from supervision, to develop self
- Apply evidence based mentoring practice informed by own research

Training schedule
You will receive on the job and off the job training from our experienced team as well as the accredited apprenticeship training provider, Heart of England Training. Your success is important to us all and we will do all we can to support your studies and learning with us. On successful completion of your apprenticeship you will be awarded the Learning and Skills Mentor Level 4 standard.
More training information
The training course will be delivered by a dedicated tutor who will set online tutorials fortnightly for a minimum of 12 months.
