Summary

As an apprentice Teaching Assistant, you will be required to support children within the class to access their learning, adapting it or reframing it to support them. You will be trained to take small groups for additional learning, which may be phonics, reading, improving writing, number work or pre-teaching vocabulary.  

Wage

£12,170.60 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

  • This role is term time only and therefore the advertised salary is pro-rata based on the term time only nature of the role

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

A  classroom Teaching Assistant supports the teacher to help children to achieve their potential:

The role will include:

  • Supporting children with daily school routines
  • Supporting children to access learning within the classroom 
  • Hearing children read
  • Planning and leading some intervention groups (once ready to do so)
  • Supporting children's emotional wellbeing
  • Upholding the school's vision and values
  • Working within the classroom/year group team 

You will be able to communicate clearly in spoken and written English and will be able to support and reinforce learning.  A solid qualification in maths and English is therefore essential.

  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Training schedule

  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English (if not previously attained at GCSE)
  • Blended on/off the job training and location to be confirmed
  • End Point Assessment:  Practical workplace observation, Q&A session and Professional Discussion 

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
