Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As a Civil Engineering Apprentice, you will work with an experienced team of Engineers, who will support you.Civil Engineers are the construction professionals who make up our site supervisory and management team. Our Civil Engineering Apprentices work predominantly on site, turning designs into reality. Your day to day will include:
Project Support
- Collaborating with experienced engineers on the design, planning and execution of civil engineering projects
- Communicating effectively at all levels
- Assist with planning and coordination of site activities
- Maintaining good working relationships with client, designer, supply chain and others
Technical Development
- Gain hands-on experience with engineering tools and processes
- Learn how to use specialist setting out equipment
Problem Solving
- Learn how to overcome challenges on live projects
- Drive quality through effective planning and right first time delivery
On-Site Experience
- Be part of real construction projects and work closely with our skilled workforce, applying your learning and knowledge in real world scenarios
- Maintain diaries of site activity
Safety and Sustainability
- Help to ensure that work is carried out safely in line with the company Health and Safety
- Maintaining high personal standards in Health and Safety
- Maintaining high standards in environmental awareness and behaviour
- Monitoring and recording delivery against the agreed programme and construction methods
- Ensuring that works are accurately and clear set out before work commences
Where you'll work
Our Regional Rail business unit operates on a national basis and these apprenticeships could be based in a number of locations, requiring apprentices to be fully mobile and prepared to work away from home when required. BAM pay a living away allowance to support acommodation costs and travel is funded. Some sites may have accomodation.

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined civil engineering problems
- Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating civil engineering systems
- Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve civil engineering problems
- Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts
- Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined civil engineering problems
- Produce and interpret civil engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used
- Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation
- Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation
- Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks
- Apply principles of sustainable development, and assess the impact of these in their work
- Employ project management techniques, measuring and recording progress against civil engineering project plans
- Assess and report on quality using appropriate management and assurance systems and continuous improvement processes
- Identify and use resources, equipment and technology to meet project requirements, including specifications, budget and timescales
- Monitor and manage individual performance, and supervise others, recognising the need to comply with appropriate codes of practice and equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) requirements
- Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, using appropriate engineering terminology and conventions
- Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
- Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Training schedule
Our Technical Apprenticeship is a five year programme and is designed to help you grow step by step:
Years 1–2: Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship
You’ll work towards a Higher Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering and complete a Higher National Certificate (HNC). During this time, you’ll also start working towards professional recognition with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).
Years 3–5: Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship
After successfully completing Level 4, you’ll have the opportunity to progress to a Degree Apprenticeship, gaining a full honours degree and continuing your journey towards Incorporated Membership of the ICE.
Our Civil Engineering apprenticeship is delivered by Leeds College of Building on a block release (periods of study away from work) basis with accommodation provided.
When you're not at college, you will be developing your site experience, learning from industry specialists.

Our unique programme offers you the opportunity to live in Leeds on a block release basis for 9 weeks of the year (hotel accommodation provided and travel paid). Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- 5 x GCSE's (grade 9 - 4 (A*-C))
- English Language (grade 4 (C) or above)
- Maths (grade 5 (B) or above)
A Level in:

Other requirements
These apprenticeships are site based and apprentices could be placed anywhere within the UK. Due to the project nature of our business, apprentices must be willing to travel / stay away from home when required. As some of our projects are in remote areas, we also require all applicants to hold full UK driving license.

After this apprenticeship
At BAM we are committed to investing in your development. Upon completion of our Level 4 apprenticeship, you will recieve a promotion and the opportunity to progress on to our Degree programme.
After completing the full 5 year programme with BAM most of our apprentices have their full Degree, Incorporated membership of the Institute of Civil Engineers and are earning in excess of £30,000 + company car / allowance.
