What you'll do at work

As a Building Services Engineering Apprentice in our Rail Stations team in London you may be involved with taking concepts, ideas and designs from an architect or engineer and creating drawings using the software to match those given. Where practical, you’ll get the opportunity to visit site and see the projects you’ve been working on, coming to life.

What you'll learn

  • Apply engineering principles to solve broadly defined engineering problems and contribute to continuous improvement: scientific, theoretical, and technical principles.
  • Apply building services engineering techniques, procedures and methods, review and evaluate the results, including when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating building services engineering systems or improving the performance of building services engineering components and systems.
  • Employ mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods, and apply an integrated or systems-based approach.
  • Identify, interpret, and compare information in relation to materials, components or parts used in building services engineering.
  • Research, collect, select and evaluate technical literature and other sources of data and information to address, analyse and evaluate building services engineering problems.
  • Produce building services engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, policies, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation.
  • Select and apply computational and analytical techniques to model building services engineering problems, recognising the limitations of the techniques employed.
  • Contribute to the design, development and implementation of building services engineering solutions, and evaluate their effectiveness in the context of the whole project life cycle.

Training schedule

  • You will attend University to study a Building Services Engineering degree apprenticeship and gain a BEng, as well as your Incorporated Engineer status with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers
  • You will be enrolled onto a bespoke internal development programme to help you to attain the knowledge, skills and behaviours to successfully achieve your apprenticeship, and support your career in Building Services Engineering
  • You will have the support of your team, line manager, mentor and buddy as well as a dedicated early careers team

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

5 GCSEs including English, Maths, Science (grade 5 or above)

A Level in:

3 A Levels to include Maths and Science (grade BBC or above)

BTEC in:

an Engineering-related subject (grade DDM (must include Maths))

After this apprenticeship

  • You will gain a Building Services Engineering degree apprenticeship with a bachelors' qualification. as well as completing your End Point Assessment (and your Incorporated Engineer status) with the Institution of Building Services
  • As this is a permanent position, after gaining your degree, WSP will continue to be committed to your learning and development throughout your career with us
  • You will have the opportunity to continue professional development and work towards gaining Chartered status or equivalent with your chosen institution, as well as the opportunity to pursue your further study and training goals
