    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The Apprentice will work towards the Level 2 qualification in Professional Cookery. The duties will include:

  • Following recipes
  • Keeping things clean and tidy
  • Assist the head chef

  • Someone who can take instruction

  • Excellent timekeeping and attendance

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Ability to work within a team, but has the initiative to work unsupervised

  • Level headed and ability to work under pressure

Personal qualities

  • The role will appeal to someone who is extremely passionate about becoming a chef.
  • The successful apprentice will have high levels of personal hygiene, be extremely reliable.

Qualifications required

  • Good understanding of numeracy and literacy.
  • GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications at grade C or above in English and maths or the ability to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills.

Future prospects

Further training and/or full time employment will be on the table for the right candidate based on performance during the Apprenticeship.

Things to consider

Due to the nature of the role, the Apprentice will be required to work a variety of shift patterns to include evening, weekends, and bank holidays.

'The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour from the 1st October 2015. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training
