Wages explained
The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Things to consider

Please bear in mind that working within the Hair and Beauty industry you are required to work long hours and especially Hairdressing you will be active for long periods of time.

You are more than likely going to be required to work Saturdays as this is a busy day for salons

Training provider

Training will be provided in the workplace or once a week in Oracle Training Centre (this is dependant on your salon owner) If it is decided you are in the workplace a trainer assessor will be visiting the salon for one to one sessions

You will be assessed on your competence in both practical and Theory

You will gain Hairdressing Level 2 NVQ Qualification, alongside this you will be required to do Functional Skills in Maths and English (dependant on any prior learning) Level will be determined on GCSE results or equivalent too.

We also include Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and Personal listening and thinking skills (PLTS) within the qualification

Working Week:

This will be discussed with you upon interview/trial in the salon. However you will be expected to do a minimum of 30 hours and maximum of 40 hours to be eligible to carry out the apprenticeship. 5 of those hours will be off the job training.

Funding arrangements:

Training on the Apprenticeship programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by the government. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age isn’t always fully funded this will be discussed on your interview.

Apprenticeship Minimum Wage:

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour from the 1st October 2015. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training
