Personal qualities

Aged between 18-33 this is a legal requirement for this role.

Qualifications required

GCSE at Grade C in English language and a GCSE at Grade G in Mathematics; or a SCE Standard Grade at Grade 2/Scottish National 5 in English and a SCE Standard Grade at Grade 6/Scottish National 4 in Mathematics.

You must have a Full UK driving licence as you will be required to drive vehicles as part of your role.

Future prospects

You gain the apprenticeship as part of phase two (trade) training for the role, meaning you have a guaranteed job the moment you complete it.

As your career progresses, we will continue to train you in new skills. You will have opportunities to attend many different courses in areas such as Aviation Security, Counter Intelligence, Protective Security, Information and Cyber Security, Criminal Investigation, Close Protection, Military Working Dogs, Computer Forensics, Crime Scene Examination, as well as management and leadership training.

Security activities including:
• Cyber and Information security
• Counter Intelligence
• Security Risk Management
• Operational threat assessments and advice
• Air Platform Security Management
• Airport security (passenger and cargo screening)
• Personnel security such as security education, vetting and screening
• Counter-terrorist search

Investigations including:
• Criminal and security investigations
• Computer forensics
• Crime scene examination
• Criminal intelligence
• Child support and Domestic Violence

Law Enforcement duties including:
• Incident response
• Liaison with local police and security organisations
• Support to major events (such as air shows)
• Surveillance
• Close protection (Operations)
• Mentoring (Operations)
• Biometrics (Operations)

RAF Police Dog handling duties including:
• Protection dogs (Patrol and Police)
• Detection dogs (Arms Explosive Search, Vehicle Search, Drugs Detection)

There are early opportunities to travel and operate overseas and at all times you will be relied upon to make decisions and use your initiative to protect RAF personnel and vital assets from the various threats they face, such as organized crime, terrorists or foreign intelligence services. Later in your career you could move into a specialist area. Like most people in the RAF, you will probably move jobs every few years, and each job is known as a tour.
