Typical Responsibilities:

  • Maintain aircraft ground power units that recharge the aircraft’s electrical supply
  • Test and repair airfield arrestor systems, which prevent aircraft from overshooting the runway
  • Overhaul specialist aircraft, domestic fire-fighting vehicles, refuelling bowsers and equipment reloaders

Similar civilian roles include Plant technician, Design and test technician, Mechanical engineering technician or Automotive technician.

Personal qualities

Aged between 16-29 this is a legal requirment for this role within the RAF.

Qualifications required

GCSEs at Grade C (Grade 4 to 5 with effect from Aug 17) or equivalent in English Language, Mathematics or SCE Standard Grades at Grade 2/Scottish National 5 in English, Mathematics and an approved Science/Technology-based subject. If you do not hold a qualification in an approved Science or Technology-based, you can still apply as a qualified General Technician (Mechanical) provided you have the required English Language and Mathematics grades. Future prospects

You gain the apprenticeship as part of phase two (trade) training for the role, meaning you have a guaranteed job the moment you complete it.

Following the completion of the NVQ Level 3 in General Engineering Maintenance, Some recruits will be enrolled onto this C&G Level 3 Certificate in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair mechanical vehicle based qualification depending on the Service need. This process of completion is through Recognised Prior Learning and the completion of a workplace portfolio of evidence.

As your career progresses, we will continue to train you in new skills and you will develop fault diagnosis techniques. You may be posted to a specialist area of employment, such as Air Defence Radar, Tactical Communications, Tactical Supply, or the Expeditionary Airfield Squadron where you’ll build temporary engineering accommodation both in the UK and abroad. You could also have opportunities for management and leadership training. The qualifications and experience you will gain in your RAF career can be used to meet the joining criteria for relevant civilian professional associations.

Things to consider

To join the RAF you will also need to meet fitness, health, nationality, residency, and other criteria detailed on the RAF Recruitment website. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
