    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Qualifications required

Must have 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Maths and be able to work towards Functional Skills at Level 1 (or equivalent).

There have been significant changes to Childcare qualifications since 1st September 2014. Those starting their Level 2 qualification after this date will only become a fully qualified Childcare Practitioner once they have completed the Level 3 EYE. The entry requirements for Level 3 include Maths and English GCSE Grades A*-C. Therefore if candidates are hoping for a long term career in Childcare they will have to complete GCSEs in Maths and English before progressing onto the Level 3.

Future prospects

If the Apprentice has developed within the workplace they may be able to progress onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Children and Young People’s Workforce, depending upon suitable vacancies at the time.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour). This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
