Summary

Ashfield District Council has an exciting opportunity for a Repairs and Maintenance Apprentice (Electrician) to join our Housing Operations Team. The successful candidate will be reliable, punctual, eager to learn, able to follow instructions, and committed to developing new skills. 

Wage

£20,875.40 a year

Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)

£10.85 per hour for the first 12 months then NMW for age for the remainder of the apprenticeship

Up to 43 days per year including bank holidays (pro rata for part time/condensed working)

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • To learn the skills of the relevant trade and to attend college, as required, whilst also gathering the required evidence in a timely manner to achieve the trade qualification
  • Accurately complete required college documentation, coursework, and workplace logs to specified deadlines, attending regular progress reviews with the apprentice advisor
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers. Build and maintain positive relationships with tenants, leaseholders, residents, and service users to support the delivery of high-quality services
  • Assist in carrying out all types of repairs and maintenance work in a multi-skilled environment allied to the relevant trade discipline in both tenanted and void properties
  • Report any repairs, maintenance, health and safety hazards, customer enquiries, breaches of tenancy, safeguarding or vulnerability that are identified during day-to-day activities
  • Utilise personal communication and protection equipment effectively and responsibly including the Company’s Vehicle Tracking and Communication system
  • Maintain, clean, and verify the safety of all allocated transport, tools, and calibrated testing equipment, reporting any defects or servicing needs immediately
  • Minimise disruption, mess and dust to the customer’s home and possessions and leave in a clean and tidy condition using cleaning materials and equipment as necessary
  • To be flexible and complete all reasonable requests considered commensurate with the role
  • Operate according to the Council’s corporate values and codes of behaviour
  • Ensure at all times, all Health & Safety legislation requirements are met and that the Council’s Health & Safety Policy, its arrangements and procedures are implemented. This includes, where applicable, taking responsibility for personal health and safety and having regard to other persons affected by the performance of the duties of the post; ensuring that risk management objectives are delivered, and other risk management activities effectively implemented and monitored
  • Exercise proper care in handling, operating or safeguarding any equipment, vehicle or appliance provided, used or issued for the performance of the duties of the post
  • Have a commitment to and understanding of the Council’s approach to equality and diversity and promote and deliver fair, sensitive and quality services
  • Comply with all relevant Council policies and procedures including financial regulations, code of conduct, HR policies / procedures, Data Protection, Freedom of Information Act and ICT Codes of Practice
  • Adhere to relevant working practices, methods and procedures and undertake relevant training and development as required and respond positively to new and alternative ways of working
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of the post
  • Engage with digital models of service delivery and support the implementation of digital working methods
  • Manage and / or use resources in ways that ensure value for money and supporting the commercialism agenda
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the delivery of excellent service for all customers and service users
  • Work effectively with all departments of the Council to ensure the delivery of quality services

What you'll learn

  • Comply with all relevant legislation including environmental, regulations, codes of practice and other relevant information and guidance when planning and performing electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be used when undertaking electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Carry out work in a tidy and safe manner, including restoration of the work area on completion of work.
  • Apply relevant legislation; Building Regulations; industry guidance notes; relevant codes of practice, the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and other relevant standards while carrying out work.
  • Understand and apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment.
  • Apply and use necessary mathematical and scientific techniques, formulae, and calculations that underpin an electrician’s work.
  • Use a range of tools, materials, equipment, and components, including prefabricated, relevant to performing electrical work in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
  • Design, plan, set up, and install electrical and related electronic systems including terminating and connecting cables in electrical wiring systems, installations, and equipment in commercial, industrial, and residential installations.
  • Inspect and test new and where applicable existing electrical Installations in industrial, commercial and residential environments using test equipment.
  • Apply diagnostic and problem-solving techniques to identify, assess and resolve electrical faults in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
  • Install electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
  • Carry out and manage own work ensuring work is compliant to the standards required of an electrician working in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
  • Record work including the completion and maintenance of work documentation, recording of test results and preparation of appropriate certification.

Training schedule

The successful candidate will undertake college-based training with West Nottinghamshire College (Station Park Campus) and must be able to attend all required training sessions
