Summary

Due to business growth TACS Hire is now in a position to recruit an apprentice Hire Controller. You will develop an in-depth technical product knowledge, health and safety knowledge and skills and learn how to advise customers on suitable products. This is a busy position that will suit a "people person" who is looking for a long term career.

Wage

£16,640 a year

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Providing information to customers to help them select the correct equipment for their planned activity.
  • Ensure that relevant health and safety information is provided.
  • Arrange transportation of equipment.
  • Communicating with customers both via e-mail and on the phone.
  • Complete contract documentation for on-hire and off-hire.
  • Ensure that equipment is safe and safety inspections have been completed.
  • Process payments - this will include calculating hire costs, deposits amounts, damage charges, excess charges, transportation costs and insurance payments.
  • Handling technical enquiries and complaints.
  • Keeping upto date with stock control, maintenance schedules and delivery/collection dates.
  • Assisting drivers with loading/unloading.

  • Comply with environmental and sustainability principles, regulations, standards and organisational systems.
  • Process new hires, damage waivers, orders, returns and enter onto company system.
  • Create and send hire quotations, contact customer and entering purchase orders.
  • Source plant, tools and equipment for customer requirements.
  • Arrange the delivery and collection of equipment.
  • Apply written communication techniques for example invoices, checklists, restrictions to drivers and hauliers delivery times, process damage agreement, notification documentation and emails.
  • Manage customer relationships.
  • Verbally communicate with customers and colleagues using industry terminology.
  • Manage customer queries, requests and handle complaints within remit or escalate when required.
  • Comply with regulations and legislation relevant to their role and business.
  • Carry out hire transaction processes for example, contract documentation for on-hire and off-hire, raising requisitions and equipment delivery.
  • Interpret and extract information from, for example schedules and drawings, machine’s operator’s manual or manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Log plant, tool and equipment breakdowns, pass over to the service department.
  • Ensure tool and equipment pre and post hire checks and operational testing of equipment has been carried out.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning opportunities and development activities.
  • Use organisational IT technology and digital systems.
  • Apply team working principles.

Training schedule

We host supporting workshops regularly throughout the apprenticeship which you will attend at our designated training site/campus. These workshops are carefully designed to support the learning required throughout the apprenticeship programme.

You will work with expert assessors and tutors to develop new knowledge, skills and behaviours within the profession.

You will experience a blended learning model.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

After this apprenticeship

This apprenticeship will give you the foundation knowledge upon which you can build a long and successful career with TACS Hire. Further training may include a higher level apprenticeship or manufacturers training or short courses to increase knowledge.
Progression would initially be to a Hire Controller then Hire Desk Manager and potentially Branch Manager.
