Summary

An opportunity has arisen within our Transport section for an Apprentice Auto- Electrical Vehicle Maintenance Technician, based at our Workshop in Rotherham.

The successful candidate will work with qualified skilled Motor Vehicle Technicians during their training and will work towards achieving NVQ level three in Vehicle Engineering.

Wage

£14,526.20 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Carry out to a high standard preventative maintenance and electrical installation on South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue vehicles, plant and equipment
  • Diagnosis and repair of faults on South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue vehicles, plant or equipment using manufacturers in house electronic diagnostic equipment
  • Work towards developing knowledge of water pumps (fire pumps) and other service-related equipment
  • Where necessary attend defected vehicles at the vehicle base
  • Complete all documentation as required by management, in conjunction with repairs or maintenance carried out on South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue vehicles, plant or equipment
  • Attend training courses, both technical and personal development either in-house or at manufacturers’ premises occasionally requiring overnight stay

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training schedule

Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician - light vehicle Level 3.

On-the-Job training to take place in our workshops: South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Workshop, Eastwood Trading Estate, Fitzwilliam Road, Rotherham, S65 1ST.

Off-the-job training will take place at GTA Doncaster, one day per week.

GCSE in:

  • English Language (grade 4/C)
  • Maths (grade 4/C)

Desirable qualifications

Other in:

Cat B (grade Pass)

To be considered for this role you must be: A highly motivated individual Committed to working as a team to achieve objectives Minimum 16 years old Demonstrate a passion for the motor vehicle industry Hold a full driving licence or willing to work towards this during the apprenticeship period. Able to meet minimum Qualifications in Maths and English (see below): English GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills, or equivalent Mathematics GCSE Grade 4/C, Level 2 Functional Skills, or equivalent.
