Monday to Friday, between 8.00am to 5.00pm. As a project-led business, the location of our work can vary depending on project needs. This role may require you to be prepared to work away from home at project sites across the UK.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As a Steel Fixer Apprentice, you’ll learn how to install the steel reinforcement that strengthens concrete structures such as columns, walls, slabs and pile caps.

You will:

  • Work safely at all times, following health and safety regulations and using the correct PPE
  • Prepare and maintain safe working areas, protecting others around you
  • Read and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Measure, cut and bend reinforcing steel
  • Install and securely tie reinforcement bars and mesh
  • Produce and fit supports such as chairs and spacer bars
  • Use hand and power tools safely and correctly
  • Work at height using appropriate access and fall protection equipment
  • Carry out quality checks once work is complete

You’ll also develop strong teamwork and communication skills, follow environmental and sustainability practices, and contribute positively to an inclusive and respectful workplace.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll build practical skills, gain industry-recognised qualifications and work as part of a supportive site team.

  • Protect others within the working vicinity through the use of barriers, signs, and bar protectors.
  • Comply with industry regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
  • Move, lift and handle materials.
  • Work at height and use access and fall protection equipment.
  • Interpret information from drawings and specifications.
  • Plan order of works and carry out pre-work checks.
  • Use and store hand tools and power tools.
  • Apply processes and techniques to install a range of in-situ steel reinforcing structures, for example, columns, walls, pile caps and slabs.
  • Measure and mark out reinforcing steel.
  • Cut and bend reinforcing steel.
  • Produce and install supports, for example, L bars, U bars, splay bars and chairs.
  • Join and tie reinforcing steel.
  • Use temporary construction bars.
  • Install bracing within steel reinforcement.
  • Communicate verbally with colleagues or customers using industry terminology.
  • Complete post build checks.
  • Follow equity, diversity and inclusion legislative guidance and principles.
  • Apply ethical principles.
  • Follow environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Use processes and techniques to build reinforcing steel assembly with a: step, penetration or upstand feature.
  • Follow work instructions - verbal or written.
  • Applies team working principles.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

3 GCSEs or equivalent (grade At least Grade 4)

The Trade and Technical Apprenticeship programme provides you with a formal college education, leading to a Level 2 and/or 3 apprenticeship standards in your chosen vocation. You will also gain a broad set of trade technical skills through on-the-job training, supported by our qualified and experienced workforce, and construction professionals.
