Summary

A Reinforcement Engineering Apprenticeship is responsible for production of models, drawings and associated schedules for a diverse range of precast elements, as well as the provision of buildability, construction methodology and value engineering advice for live projects and tenders, as required by the business.

What you'll do at work

Key Deliverables and Accountabilities of a Reinforcement Engineering:

Apprenticeship Work closely with the Senior Reinforcement Engineers to produce information in the form of a model to be shared through various business streams, ensuring safety in design and good practice.

Ensure company QA procedures are followed.
Preparation of Models, drawings, and schedules for a diverse range of temporary works schemes.

Preparing engineered solutions to latest Eurocodes and relevant industry guidance.

Highly computer literate (MS Office including MS Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint, PDF Editors).

  • Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating civil engineering systems
  • Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve civil engineering problems
  • Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts
  • Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Produce and interpret civil engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used
  • Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation
  • Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation
  • Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks
  • Apply principles of sustainable development, and assess the impact of these in their work
  • Employ project management techniques, measuring and recording progress against civil engineering project plans
  • Assess and report on quality using appropriate management and assurance systems and continuous improvement processes
  • Identify and use resources, equipment and technology to meet project requirements, including specifications, budget and timescales
  • Monitor and manage individual performance, and supervise others, recognising the need to comply with appropriate codes of practice and equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) requirements
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, using appropriate engineering terminology and conventions
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Training schedule

Apprenticeship Standard & Provider     

Level 4, apprenticeship Civil engineering senior technician / Skills England.  Upon completion of the level 4, you would then typically progress to a level 6 apprenticeship, with a typical duration of 5-6 years.

Laing O'Rourke collaborates with trusted and approved training providers which in this case is Exeter University to deliver this apprenticeship on a block release basis. 

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade At least grade 4)
  • Maths (grade At least 4)

Desirable qualifications

A Level in:

Maths or a Science subject (grade 126 UCAS points overall)

T Level in:

T level in Design and Development for Engineering (grade Distinction)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Entry requirements 

To be considered applicants must:   

4 GCSEs at C/4+, including maths & English  
Be working towards or achieved 3 A Level's at grades of ABB (128 UCAS points). A Levels must include maths and a Science Subject (preferably Physics) OR  
BTEC Extended Diploma in a construction related subject (Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction and Built Environment etc) working towards or achieved grades of DMM. Modules studied must include ‘Further Engineering Mathematics' and preferably ‘Calculus to solve Engineering problems' OR  
IB Math's HL5 and another science subject HL5 OR  
T level in Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing – Distinction   
Please note, we may consider applicants that have achieved 96 UCAS points and above. If studying A Levels, this must include maths and a science subject.  This will be dependent on the availability of a training provider.    

Applicants must also:     

Have strong numeracy and literacy skills    
Be flexible as you may be required to work away        
Be eligible to work in the UK     

About this employer

The Trade and Technical Apprenticeship programme provides you with a formal college education, leading to a Level 2 and/or 3 apprenticeship standards in your chosen vocation. You will also gain a broad set of trade technical skills through on-the-job training, supported by our qualified and experienced workforce, and construction professionals. A dedicated mentor and approved training provider will work closely with you, providing regular feedback on your progress towards completing your apprenticeship.
