Join us at Ibstock PLC as a Dual-skilled Apprentice Engineer and take your first step towards becoming a fully qualified engineer. This 4-year programme will equip you with a Level 3 - Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship, while offering you hands-on experience, mentorship from industry experts, and a competitive salary.

What We Offer:

  • Full-time training at MAKE UK Training School in your first year you will be residential and live in Birmingham in 4 week blocks (we cover all travel and accommodation costs when staying over at Make UK).

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Supporting our engineering team with the maintenance of plant equipment and preventative tasks.
  • Studying a range of subjects, including Electronic Fault Finding, Features and Applications of Electrical Machines, and Principles and Operations of Three Phase Systems to name but a few.
  • In addition, going forward, you will also study a number of Mechanical units in both your knowledge and competency qualifications, such as Maintaining Mechanical Equipment and Mechanical Fault Diagnosis to build your expertise in both electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Developing key computer skills, as you’ll input data into our maintenance system and help analyse production data.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Use information technology, for example to create documentation, communication and information management.
  • Obtain, read and interpret task related documentation, such as work instructions, quality control documents, drawings, operation manuals, specifications and service manuals.
  • Record information for example job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation, asset management records, work sheets, checklists, waste environmental records and any legal reporting requirements.
  • Conduct initial assessment of equipment that requires maintenance.
  • Formulate plans setting out the methodology of the maintenance activity including timescales and resources.
  • Select, prepare and use material, consumables, tools and equipment.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and organisational requirements applicable in the workplace. For example, COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, PPE and applying safe systems of work.
  • Apply dynamic risk assessment, hazard identification and risk mitigation principles and techniques.
  • Apply isolation principles and techniques to equipment undergoing maintenance, including dissipation of stored energies as required.
  • Manufacture, repair and refurbish components using hand and machine tools.
  • Restore the workplace on completion of the maintenance activity. Handover resources, consumables and equipment to process owner.
  • Apply the techniques and processes used in reactive maintenance and repair activities on complex engineered systems such as electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems.
  • Produce, maintain, update, record and store documentation including electronic items such as PLC and robot programmes.
  • Apply techniques and processes used in planned and preventative maintenance activities on engineered systems such as electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems.
  • Apply functional testing and checking techniques and processes after maintenance interventions, and handover to the operational team.
  • Apply techniques and processes used in condition monitoring, non-destructive or sensory testing. Record findings and take necessary actions.
  • Apply calculation techniques such as, feeds, speeds, tolerances, electrical calculations using Ohms law, power calculations and cable sizing calculations.
  • Select, use and confirm calibration of electrical and mechanical testing and measuring equipment.
  • Produce sketches or drawings to support maintenance activities.
  • Communicate in writing. Prepare communications, documents and reports on technical matters.
  • Segregate, separate and dispose of waste streams and by-products.
  • Apply 4S or 5S principles of housekeeping to the work environment.
  • Identify opportunities and make recommendations to improve operational performance.
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques.
  • Communicate with others verbally. Negotiate with colleagues or stakeholders. For example, to access equipment or arrange access to equipment.
  • Follow equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.

Training schedule

  • During the first year, you will attend Make UK Training School for 4 weeks at a time to study the Level 2 Diploma – AUEC Practical Workshop Units as well as a BTEC Level 3 Engineering. You will then return to the factory for 2 weeks to apply the skills you have learnt in those 4 weeks practically within your factory. In the 4 weeks you are studying at Make UK Training school you will be required to stay over Monday – Friday in Birmingham (all travel and hotel costs are covered by Ibstock).
  • Your second year is based at the factory with block release to the Training School to complete studying your BTEC Level 3 Diploma and Level 3 Diploma – Development Competence (assessed at factory).
  • During your third and fourth years you will be based in the factory putting your newly gained skills and knowledge into practice and completing your Level 3 Diploma. The final year also includes your End-Point Assessment which, once successfully completed, leads to your new role within Ibstock as a qualified dual-skilled engineer. 

More training information

During the time you are studying at Make UK Training school, you will be required to stay over Monday – Friday in Birmingham (all travel and hotel costs are covered by Ibstock).

GCSE in:

  • Science (or other relevant subject) (grade 4)

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

Engineering or similar (grade 4)

After this apprenticeship

Once you complete your apprenticeship, you should expect to progress to becoming a maintenance engineer. However, the sky is the limit. Ibstock takes pride in having former apprentices as plant managers, engineering managers and even a sales manager.
