As part of the ALS team, you will be working within the chemistry department testing a wide range of food, food ingredients, animal/pet food and food supplements/nutraceuticals for nutritional labelling purposes, such as protein and fat content.

What you will do in your working day

Why Should You Apply?

  • You will be exposed to the latest scientific testing equipment as well as classical techniques to develop your technical knowledge as well as the ability to follow SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures), using LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and problem solving


  • In addition to developing your technical knowledge, you will broaden your understanding of the importance of quality within the laboratory and how it is integral to everything we do to meet industry and legal requirements

Position Duties and Scope:

  • Experience within the sample receipt team receiving samples for analysis
  • Registering samples for analysis on LIMS in preparation for laboratory analysis
  • Preparing samples for analysis including weighing and performing volumetric dilutions
  • Analysing samples including utilising basic chemistry techniques, specific analysers, HPLC and other analytical methodology
  • Completing laboratory write ups and data recording in accordance with internal and regulatory requirements
  • Data and result entry into LIMS
  • Completing traceability records and adhering to quality policies
  • Performing daily calibrations and checks
  • Ensuring assigned work is carried out in a timely fashion following the relevant procedures

The training you will be getting

Through the training provider, CSR Scientific Training, you will undertake a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship which will include: 

  • Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 3 Laboratory Technician
  • On-the-job competency training
  • Theoretical knowledge - BTEC Level 3 Applied Science or Level 4 HNC (depending on previous qualifications)

The majority of your learning will be completed online once a week with some face-to-face practical sessions/exams in Sutton Coldfield.

Upon successful completion, apprentices can apply for professional registration as a Registered Science Technician, RSciTech, with either the Royal Society of Chemistry or Royal Society of Biology.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you could be offered a permanent position with ALS.

Things to consider

The work can be of a repetitive nature and will involve standing for long periods. If you have a BSc, MSc or PhD, you are ineligible to start this apprenticeship.
