What you will do in your working day

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • To accurately and promptly carry out the instructions of the Registered Nurse (RN) or appropriate individual (AI) (RN) who is professionally accountable for the delivery of care.
  • To carry out duties as specified in within the trust’s Approved Core Task List (page 5) for Health Care Assistant
  • To report to registered staff any patient that gives cause for concern or any observed changes in a patient’s clinical condition.
  • To support patient’s emotional well-being by supporting positive conversations, actively encouraging participation in ward-based activities
  • To accurately document all care delivered to patients, including recording documentation electronically on trust systems maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies to ensure the patient receives appropriate care. Be aware of role in emergency situations and what actions should be undertaken.
  • To be aware of and adhere to all trust policies / procedures / nursing guidelines when undertaking any activities. 
  • To make patients welcome to the clinical area and participate in the admission process under the supervision of registered staff.
  • Provide and deliver a high standard of individualised personal nursing care. 
  • To keep the clinical area clean and tidy maintaining a safe environment 
  • To adhere to trust infection control procedures.
  • 12.       To assist in the preparation of patients and equipment for treatment, investigations or procedures as directed by a RN or AI. 
  • To chaperone/escort patients to other clinical departments and or NHS Units under the direction of the RN or AI
  • To support relatives under the guidance of a RN or AI
  • To assist with the discharge preparation for patients directed by RN (AI) and or member of Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)

The training you will be getting

You will work towards a Level 2 Healthcare Support worker Apprenticeship hosted by City College Norwich. You will be expected to attend college once every two weeks for class's and meetings with assessors. Observations with assessors will also take place within your workplace to best provide progressive feedback to support your development.

Upon successful completion you will receive a nationally recognised Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship qualification. This will be a 14 month fixed term post with a guaranteed position as a Band 3 (£22,816pa) Clinical Support Worker within the Trust. This guaranteed job will be offered subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship, completion of set clinical competences required to meet a band 3 role and demonstration of appropriate conduct.

Functional Skills in maths and English, if required.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

The Apprentice Healthcare Assistant could be your entry into a variety of clinical roles within the organisation. This includes pathways in continung to follow a apprenticeship pathway to become a registered Nursing Associate, Nurse, Physiotherapist and Assistant Practitoner. This role support your learning with both Nursing and Therapy pathways.

At the end of this apprenticeship a guaranteed position as a Band 3 (£22,816pa) Clinical Support Worker within the Trust could be offered. This guaranteed job will be offered subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship, completion of set clinical competences required to meet a band 3 role and demonstration of appropriate conduct.
