What you will do in your working day

The Apprentice will support the work of research groups by assisting with the following tasks:

  • Assisting with the Laboratory Sustainability work and help drive through green initiatives. This will be focused on assisting with the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), is a green lab certification scheme which you will help to implement in our labs. You will also assist with energy audits of our cold storage to help improve our understanding of the environmental costs of our cold storage.
  • Learn techniques such as growing mammalian cells for further experimentation, preparing samples for microscopic examination, analysing proteins, and extracting DNA.
  • Maintaining supplies of laboratory essentials by stock taking and ordering and by the sterilization of some equipment and reagents.
  • Contributing to the maintenance and proper use of equipment
  • Helping in the smooth running of laboratories by facilitating sustainable waste practices and maintaining lists of chemicals and equipment.
  • Learn laboratory techniques such as cell culture, histology, protein chemistry and DNA extraction.

The training you will be getting

Through the training provider, CSR Scientific Training, you will undertake a Level 3 Education Technician Apprenticeship which will include: 

  • Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 3 Education Technician 
  • On-the-job competency training 
  • IOSH Working Safely qualification

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

We would like this role to lead to a Level 1 Core Facility Technical Role if funding is approved
