Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the QPR Sports Turf Team as an Apprentice Grounds person where you will learn all aspects of turf management in a high-profile sporting venue. To help maintain and prepare the playing surfaces to an excellent standard and ensure that all games and training sessions can go ahead on schedule.

Hours
Monday to Friday 7am to 2.30pm, with a 30 minutes lunch break. Occasionally working during the weekend or very occasional evenings to gain experience and cover match days at both the stadium and training ground for which time off in lieu is given.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

  • Level 2 Sports Turf Operative Apprenticeship.
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths if required.
  • One day a week for theory and practical in the Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA).

Sports turf operative (level 2)

Course contents
  • Apply the correct rates and range of materials to sports turf surfaces (e.g. grass seed, granular fertilisers, bulky top-dressing, turf and root zone).
  • Set and mark out the sports turf surface in accordance with the relevant governing body rules (including line marking, the 3-4-5 squaring technique, and marking arcs and semi-circles).
  • Prepare machinery and equipment to ensure their safe and effective use when carrying out sport turf tasks.
  • Maintain levels of soil moisture using either irrigation or drainage systems.
  • Inspect the condition of sports turf, make observations and communicate findings (e.g. PQS, weeds, pests, diseases, thatch content).
  • Prepare the ground and established grass areas as part of sports turf renovation tasks (e.g. overseeding, turfing).
  • Carry out cylinder mowing of sports turf surface(s) in accordance with set requirements.
  • Carry out repair of sports turf surfaces using relevant equipment and machinery (e.g. divot repair, foot hole repair, animal damage).
  • Prepare and safely operate a tractor and it's attachments.
  • Select and use relevant communication styles (e.g. verbal, written, digital) to convey information to different audiences (e.g. clients, staff, suppliers).
  • Adopts a systematic approach to troubleshooting and solving day-to-day resource or equipment issues.
  • Identify a range of turf grasses (vegetative and seed). (Including, perennial ryegrass smooth stalk meadow grass, annual meadow grass, fescue grass (fine), bent grass).
  • Carry out maintenance of sports turf surface using relevant equipment and machinery (including scarification, and aeration).
  • Dispose of waste in a safe and sustainable manner.

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English and maths (grade A/8-C4)
    • Landscaping or Gardening (grade Any Qualification)

    Other requirements

    Additional work location is QPR TSG Training and Performance centre, Crane Lodge Road, Cranford, Middlesex TW5 9PQ. After one year they'd switch to ensure both get experience at both locations. Candidates will be screened as part of the recruitment process and must be able to work at Level 1 in Functional Skills (maths and English) in order to undertake this Apprenticeship. Committed to college attendance to complete the formal training required to gain a recognised industry qualification. Club uniform and PPE will be provided by the Club which must be worn on duty.

    QPR FC (Queens Park Rangers) is a professional football club with a history dating back to 1882 and currently operating in the Championship league with aspirations of operating in the premier league. With this in mind, QPR have embarked on a considerable investment and development project following the recent purchase of our very own training ground. We are into our second year of a 5-year project that will see a £30m investment into our new training centre incorporating a new state of the art elite and academy building and performance centre along with a new bespoke grounds maintenance building. The project also includes state of the art hybrid Grass pitches made up of 5 new Desso pitches all with automatic watering system and on our showcase pitch, added floodlighting and undersoil heating.

    After this apprenticeship

    The position may lead to a full-time position at the training ground or stadium following the successful completion of the apprenticeship.
