What you will do in your working day

The day-to-day role responsibilities:

  • Loading out materials
  • Mixing mortar
  • Keeping the site tidy
  • Measuring & cutting blocks
  • Working with stringlines
  • Laying blocks and bricks
  • Adhering to health and safety 

The training you will be getting

  • The apprentice will be working towards the Bricklayer Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.
  • Functional Skills in maths and English, if required.
  • Block release college attendance will be at Colchester Institute's Colchester campus.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

We have taken on numerous apprentices over the years, with four former bricklaying apprentices now working with us 5 days a week on a permanent basis. Historically several bricklayers have progressed to Site Supervisor including our longest-serving Site Supervisor, who has been with the company for 20 plus years.

Things to consider

99% of our sites are within 5 miles of Colchester so very little travel is required. Apprentices will still need to arrange their own transport albeit the distance will not be too far, but should be mindful that public transport may not be that regular before 7.30 am. Apprentices will need to provide their own safety footwear. Can be both inside and outside work irrelevant of weather conditions.

Our company have 40+ years of extensive experience and expert knowledge of the construction industry. From renovations, extensions through to one off new builds or small new housing developments in both the domestic and commercial sectors. Current turnover circa £3M, with four full time supervisors running 4 sites in/around Colchester area together with a Small works supervisor
