What you will do in your working day

Our client is looking for a trustworthy, experienced and enthusiastic person to work as part of a team to ensure the smooth running of all aspects of the garden.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a newly designed garden and put your own stamp on this great project with the guidance and mentoring of an experienced head gardener. The gardening work will include maintenance of the newly designed and built garden at Baughurst and Malthouse and the wider parkland. Watering and care of the newly planted parkland trees will be essential in the first 24 months of employment along with other duties including establishing the new gardens. In due course, as a new garden is built, the role will expand to include maintenance of the new garden.

The position is generally full-time Monday to Friday but there may be occasional weekend work and the applicants will need to be flexible.

DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The following provides a brief summary of the duties involved in this post, but it should not be regarded as an exhaustive list:

  • Cutting and maintaining lawns
  • Pruning trees and shrubs
  • Flower border management
  • Vegetable growing
  • Greenhouse management
  • Leaf clearance
  • Watering of plants and trees
  • Pest control

Working with the head gardener on any other duties as may be required from time to time within the general scope of the post.

 

The training you will be getting

  • Horticulture and Landscape Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard
  • Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (Ofqual registered) minimum 1-day course
  • Lantra Awards Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Pesticides OR City and Guilds Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides
  • Lantra Awards Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticide Using Hand Held Equipment OR City and Guilds Level 2 Award In The Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment
    Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths must achieve Level 1 and take the test for Level 2 before taking the end-point assessment.
    Apprentices will need to achieve the EPA's to achieve their apprenticeship:
  • On-line knowledge assessment - a 60-minute online test containing 40 multiple choice questions
  • Practical assessment EPA - a range of 4 practical activities taking no more than six hours undertaken in controlled conditions with responses to verbal questioning from the Independent End Point Assessor. The apprentice will undertake three core tasks and one task from the optional route - Horticulture or Landscaping
  • Professional Discussion EPA - An hour-long professional discussion under controlled conditions between the EPA and the apprentice to allow the apprentice to demonstrate their knowledge
  • Training schedule has yet to be agreed. Details will be made available at a later date

Things to consider

This is a physically demanding role where you will be required to work outdoors in all weathers. For insurance purposes and due to the location of the Estate and lack of public transport a driving licence and own transport will be required.
