What you will do in your working day

You’ll gain insight into the efficient ordering, control and utilisation of materials, plant equipment, transport and subcontracted works. You’ll learn how to interpret complex specifications, drawings, surveying, contracts and instructions associated with works and projects.

You’ll gain first-rate training and mentoring along with workplace experience and the formal qualifications to back it up! Throughout the training period you will gain your Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician Apprenticeship through one of our carefully selected partner training providers. What’s more, all of our apprentices are recruited on to a permanent contract from day one, so once you’re finished training, you’ll transition to a role within our Construction Team. There will also be the opportunity to progress on to further study such as a HNC as well as gaining additional nationally recognised industry qualifications eg: New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) training.

Within your role you will support the Contract Agent and Contract Manager managing small teams of operational staff and sub-contractors engaged on highway and civil engineering construction and maintenance projects to ensure they are delivered on time and to cost. You’ll gain insight into the efficient ordering, control and utilisation of materials, plant equipment, transport and subcontracted works. You’ll learn how to interpret complex specifications, drawings, surveying, contracts and instructions associated with works and projects.

Candidate requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or equivalent and a B/6 in maths
  • Hold level 2 English and maths functional skills qualifications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a high standard of written English, spelling and grammar
  • Good ICT skills with experience of using applications including Microsoft Word and Excel, email and the internet
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to be able to work with a wide range of people
  • Excellent time management skills and strong attention to detail 
  • The ability to be able to work as part of a team as well as autonomously

The training you will be getting

You will gain a level 4 HNC in Civil Engineering.

Training schedule has yet to be agreed. Details will be made available at a later date. 

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

You will offboard this apprenticeship as a Contract Agent in the construction team in our operations department.

Things to consider

Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to have achieve this prior to taking the End Point Assessment. Applicants will need a driving licence or will need to be working towards one in order to attend site and meetings in their company vehicle, across the county, as part of their role.
