What you will do in your working day

Day-to-day tasks will vary but include:

  • Servicing - carrying out vehicle/tyre checks
  • MOT’s - assisting to identify parts with wear and tear
  • Vehicle Maintenance – replacing/repairing engine parts
  • Diagnostics - using the latest diagnostic equipment
  • Maintaining repair and service records

The techniques and daily responsibilities you will learn will include:

  • Using diagnostic, mechanical and electrical measuring equipment to investigate vehicle faults and identify their underlying causes
  • Inspecting and preparing fleet vehicles ready for mechanical work
  • Removing, repairing or replacing components to the correct specification
  • Contributing to a safe working environment, by working within Health and Safety processes
  • Admin duties that include updating job cards

The training you will be getting

Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Apprenticeship Standard:

  • During this 3-year apprenticeship programme, you will attend the GTA one day per week
  • At the GTA you will learn the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the main aspects of the motor vehicle service and maintenance technician apprenticeship
  • The training is delivered in the classroom, IT suite and in our state-of-the-art workshop
  • Functional skills in maths and English (if required)

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Professional technical training leading to Diagnostic/Master Technician, MOT Tester status or sector-specific advanced qualifications.
