What you will do in your working day

In the first year you will be attending college full time to gain  practical skills training and underpinning knowledge. 

Once in the workplace duties will include:

  • Monitor, diagnose faults and operate systems from a DCS (distributed control system) to operate the ERF plant in accordance with an environmental permit
  • Utilise trends to carry out fault finding and process excursions on the ERF plant
  • Understand the different areas of operations covering a range of tasks
  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation of the ERF plant
  • Carry out first line maintenance and diagnostics on a range of mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Work with other functions and departments such as Engineering, Environmental, Health and Safety and Fuel Supply/ Education
  • Be aware of safe systems of work and safety rules, achieving Competent Person Authorisation
  • Report all defects within the Computerised Maintenance Management System, ensuring they are followed up with the relevant department
  • Identify and find resolutions for problems in a calm, logical manner
  • Ensure that all activities within the ERF plant are carried out in a safe manner in line with local site and Viridor procedures
  • Housekeeping is to be carried out on a regular basis to ensure a high standard of site cleanliness
  • Assist in completion of relevant inspections, reports and audits
  • Assist with all startup and shutdown activities within the plant ensuring plant downtime is minimised
  • Monitor loading and unloading operations
  • Understand boiler operation, Combustion, Heat Transfer, Rankine Cycle, Steam Tables, Water Chemistry
  • Understand Steam Turbine & Generator Operation, Pressure control, Power Control, Gland Steam, Power Generation
  • Understand and comply with the sites Environmental Permit, abatement and monitoring systems
  • Work as part of a team striving for Continual Improvement
  • On completion of appropriate training operate applicable plant and apparatus to ensure the operational output of the site is maintained
  • Complete appropriate training courses to facilitate your role including but not limited to Confined Space Entry and Working at Height

The training you will be getting

You will attend East Surey College full time in the first year and carry out practical training covering a range of engineering activities including:

  • Bench fitting
  • Machining (Turning and Milling)
  • Welding
  • Electrical Installation
  • Electronics & Soldering

You will also study a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Electrical and Electronic).

This qualification will extend into the second year attending as a day release student to college.
