    You will receive automatic pay rises each year within your grade band, and nationally negotiated salary increases, normally effective in August each year.

  • Working week

    You will work an average of 36 hours per week, Monday-Friday. Flexibility may be needed during peak periods. Some weekend work may be necessary in the event of a major incident, emergency or planned repair - for these periods overtime is payable (Salary £21,543).

What you will do in your working day

We are seeking to appoint an Apprentice Maintenance Electrician to join the Campus Operations team, within Estates, who offer a reactive and planned maintenance service to University-owned properties across all our campuses and sites.

You will be supported to learn how to carry out reactive and planned maintenance on the university’s power and lighting systems. Carry out routine inspections and the planned maintenance schedules of the University's emergency lighting, fire and lift systems.

This role will likely be predominately based at the Whiteknights Campus, Reading. Main duties and responsibilities of the role include:

Technical:

  • Take instructions from an experienced tradesman, Senior Tradesman or Supervisor/Manager in order to independently complete basic technical electrical tasks.
  • Safely operate basic equipment and seek assistance from an experienced electrician when required.
  • To gain an understanding of the University HV/LV philosophies and regulations, and to gain an understanding of BS7671 Wiring Regulations.

Health & Safety:

  • To be proactive in maintaining, supporting & promoting a secure and safe working environment for all customers, staff, and visitors.
  • With support carry out work in accordance with written and verbal instruction. This includes following University safety procedures and policies, safe systems of work and current Health & Safety legislation.

Customer support:

  • Maintain regular contact with customers and stakeholders to ensure that the services provided meet their needs & expectations affecting them in a timely manner.
  • Learn to prioritise workload and ensure compliance with agreed Service Level Agreements.

The training you will be getting

You will work towards the Installation & Maintenance Electrician (Level 3) Apprenticeship run by Windsor Forest Colleges Group, based at Langley College, a short walk from Langley train station.

The apprenticeship is taught at college 1 day/week during term time. Travel expenses will be paid to attend college in Langley. 

You will gain the following qualifications through this apprenticeship:

  • Level 3 Installation & Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship standard
  • City and Guilds- Level 3 Understand the Requirements of Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018 (2022) (18th edition certificate)
  • City and Guilds- Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification (installation)
  • AM2S: Electrotechnical End Point Assessment Certificate

You will report to the Reactive Maintenance Manager, Building Services, and will be supported by an apprenticeship mentor from the trade team.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

This role provides a fantastic opportunity for those looking for their first maintenance electrician role to gain experience of working in a friendly and supportive estate team.

Our previous apprentices have been successful in progressing on to permanent roles and further apprenticeships within the Estates team at the University.

Things to consider

Applicants must have a full, clean valid driving licence. The role will involve manual handling and working at height. You must be able to travel to Whiteknights campus in Reading most days (and other campuses when required) for work, and Windsor Forest Colleges Group - Langley College approximately 1 day/week during term time.
