What you will do in your working day

  • To foster independence by assisting the child to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills
  • To help students access the curriculum by differentiating instructions and resources
  • To assist with break-time and lunchtime supervision including facilitating games and activities
  • To understand and apply school policies in relation to health, safety, welfare and behaviour management
  • Promote literacy and numeracy across the curriculum
  • Support the use of ICT in the classroom and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
  • Promote positive pupil behaviour in line with school policies and help keep pupils on task

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

On completion of this apprenticeship the candidate will be a fully-qualified Teaching Assistant for Learning Support.

About the employer

Glenwood School is a Community Special School maintained by the Local Authority. It caters for up to 225 learners between three and nineteen years of age. It is a co-educational school for learners with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. Approximately 60% have a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder and approximately 30% have significant physical and/or sensory impairments. Many learners require high levels of support, which may include personal and health care needs and or behaviour which challenges others. Glenwood School offers a flexible approach to learning and life opportunities, respecting and valuing the individuality of every learner. We believe in the need for all involved with Glenwood School being fully aware of the interdependency of individual contributions in providing a service for learners that is fully integrated at the point of delivery.
