What you will do in your working day

Underwriting Technician Apprentices would be a valued and integral part of our Commercial Express Underwriting team. Helping to deliver excellent customer service to insurance brokers.

Through a detailed training and induction program, Apprentices will build collaborative relationships with all Commercial Express internal stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of departmental roles and how these contribute to the success of the business.

Provided with an understanding of the general Insurance Industry and specifically product training on the Commercial schemes that Commercial Express specialise in.

Responsibilities of an Underwriting Technician Apprentice involve:

  • Diary management, of own training schedules and tasks.
  • Handling inbound/outbound telephone calls to assist the customer service levels of the department.
  • Perform data entry of insurance information into in-house systems including Excel spreadsheets and internal platforms.
  • Involved in Underwriter briefings and updates to help with understanding of department function and tasks.
  • Perform ad-hoc operational duties to support the Underwriting Department.
  • The aim will be to gain a Level 1 underwriting licence to assist the wider team with referrals and start to build external broker relationships.

Apprentices will work towards the Insurance Practitioner Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

  • Fully and part funded learning and development programme that includes the Cert CII
  • Develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of successful Insurance Practitioners
  • Role-specific route ways tailor the apprenticeship to the job role:
    • Claims Handler/Loss Adjuster
    • Assistant Underwriter
    • Junior Broker
  • Free CII membership for non-members through the CII Aspire Apprenticeship Programme:
  • Includes digital CII study books and exam entries
  • Resit costs for CII exams and End-Point-Assessment will be covered by the employer
  • Fortnightly workshops for each CII exam
  • All workshops recorded and available on-demand
  • Interactive chat, forums and class notebooks for real time support and assistance from experienced and qualified insurance professionals
  • Exam tips, tricks, and strategies
  • Regular tutorials and assessments with sector experts

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Our CE Learning platform will enable Apprentices to participate in a wide range of soft skill and technical courses to aid their continuing professional development.

It is anticipated that Apprentices will be able to work towards gaining their own Underwriting licence that would help to assist the wider team with referrals and start to build external broker relationships.

Permanent fulltime ‘Underwriter’ opportunities would be available following successful completion of the Apprenticeship program and achieving the CII qualification.

Things to consider

The Apprentice starting salary will be aimed at £18,000 but Commercial Express would be prepared to go up to £18,500 to secure suitable candidates. Due to FCA regulations, Apprentices will be required to conduct basic Finance and DBS checks. Commercial Express will arrange and pay for these checks. Following successful completion of the 18-month Apprenticeship and achieving the CII qualification, Commercial Express is able to offer fulltime permanent employment contracts. Starting salary for permanent role would be £25,000 Per annum. Commercial Express offers hybrid working which is the ability to work from both the office and home if desired. Initially Apprentices will be fulltime office based to help build relationships and effective training. In time they may have the opportunity to work from home up to 3 days a week if they wish and have suitable working environment. Apprentices would receive Health and safety training to assist in their home DSE setup and required to complete a home risk assessment. All IT equipment will be provided to facilitate both office and home working. Must have the Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship provided)
