What you will do in your working day

Duties will include:

  • Working on rural and urban roads to repair damaged surfaces, using hand and power tools and pedestrian plant machinery.  ​
  • Working in a team, you will repair potholes, complete surface work, replace kerbs, installing street iron works and much more! ​
  • In addition, you will be trained in using machinery and plant. For example; Stihl saws, wacker plates, rollers etc.​
  • You will be given full manual handling training and helped to obtain a CSCS card.
  • You will be trained to drive our HGV vehicles and Gritters, which will require a driving licence.

The training you will be getting

  • The apprentice will gain a Level 2 Highways maintenance skilled operative Apprenticeship Standard
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths will be provided for those without Grade 4/C (or equivalent) if required
  • Training will take place in block periods
  • Apprentice must be able to travel to London, SE16 7PJ for College

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • Following successful completion of the apprentieship, successful candidates will move into permanent Road Surfacing 'Operative' positions
  • Operatives work as part of an asphalt machine lay gang, working on a variety of schemes such as  motorways & airfields to new build carriageways, standard local authority streetworks as well as private, industrial & commercial works

Things to consider

This role will involve working outside, during all seasons of the calendar. Interviews will be taking place on the 7th June.
