What you will do in your working day

This role is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to start their career in business administration, develop new skills, and gain experience within HR.

Based in the HR Operations team, this post will work across different service areas within Human Resources. The purpose of the role is to ensure the efficient operation of the department by providing reception and administration support for all University of Reading staff.

Main duties and responsibilities of the role:

  • To be responsible for covering the Human Resources Reception
  • To be responsible for general administration support relating to Human Resources such as checking/raising letters for members of staff
  • Support a range of activities within the department and be the first point of contact for any associated enquiries
  • To answer telephone and email queries coming into the Human Resources office
  • Be responsible for ordering materials, equipment, and stationery for the department
  • Booking of external courses and associated administration where appropriate
  • Develop and maintain basic knowledge of our HR systems including E-Learning platform and our in-house HR system
  • Inputting basic information to ensure the Human Resources Intranet site and systems are up to date and accurate
  • Maintain electronic records, putting together associated reports/data as required for schools and departments
  • Produce and deliver clear and reliable information about Human Resources opportunities and updates and to communicate to staff using a range of methods
  • Maintain standards for the department and identifying/implementing ways of monitoring and improving the administration processes, ensuring best practise at all times.
  • Role model University behaviours enabling the delivery of a customer focussed service and strategy
  • Working on own initiative and prioritising workload, ensuring timely and efficient processing of administration tasks

The training you will be getting

Duration :

  • 15 months practical training period, plus 3 months for End Point Assessment


  • Work-based training with your employer, University of Reading
  • Day release training at Farnborough College of Technology 1 working day per fortnight during term-time
  • Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours per week of an apprentice’s time at work

End Point Assessment:

  • Knowledge test

Things to consider

You must also be able to commute to Whiteknights Campus up to 5 days per week as required. You must be able to reliably commute to Farnborough College of Technology 1 working day per fortnight during term-time. You may claim travel expenses for travel to/from college in line with the UoR Expenses Policy.
