What you will do in your working day

During this apprenticeship you will be learning how to become an effective Care and Support Worker and you will be supported by your Line Manager and the wider team to learn a variety of new skills to help you achieve your qualification.

Main Duties:

  • Work as part of a team to provide opportunities for college students to develop independent living skills such as preparing healthy meals, maintaining a high level of personal care and hygiene, staying safe, managing budgets and shopping
  • Provide a supportive and caring environment for young people who are learning the skills needed to live more independently, and promote their social and emotional wellbeing
  • Maintain a stable and positive environment for learners at all times
  • Ensure learners have access to support when needed
  • Provide opportunities for learners to develop social and communication skills. This will include working on projects with other students, visiting friends and family, participating in social activities at the house and within the community
  • Support the learners to travel independently for college, work placements and social purposes and to take travel arrangements into consideration when planning their schedule
  • Ensure Health and Safety Regulations are adhered to at all times, maintaining accurate records and following Safeguarding procedures
  • To plan, organise and support high quality leisure activities under the direction of your line management
  • Contribute to the recording of student progress and achievement and identify areas for development
  • Liaise with all staff, parents and professionals to ensure the learner’s individual needs are met at the residential facility, college and the workplace
  • Participate fully in regular team meetings to update learner’s personalised programmes including risk assessment, behaviour management planning and case reviews
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to equality to develop a community which celebrates and values diversity
  • To establish and maintain a high level of customer service for residents, students, parents and other appropriate individuals/group

  • To represent and promote the College brand values internally and externally; acting as an ambassador for business development on behalf of the College
  • Promote the College’s student first ethos by supporting at College open events to provide a quality experience for perspective students

The training you will be getting

The level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeship standard will equip you with the skills and knowledge to enable you to support adults with care and support needs to achieve their personal goals and live as independently and safely as possible, enabling them to have control and choice in their lives.

You will learn through a mainly work-based route. Your Diploma will be delivered within your workplace where you may attend workshops with your college assessor.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will complete an endpoint assessment which consists of a knowledge examination (situational judgment multiple-choice test) and a professional discussion with an external assessor to gain your apprenticeship certificate. On completion you will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care.

You will need to complete 15 standards of the care certificate and 20% off-the-job training. Apprentices can only attempt the separate, mandatory end point assessment once the recognised Diploma and the 15 standards as set out in the Care Certificate have been attempted and achieved.

The end point assessment will include two distinct components. Firstly, the completion of a situational judgement test answered through a multiple choice exercise and secondly a professional discussion.

You will need to complete Functional Skills Level 2 if GCSE Grade 4 – 5 has not been achieved. 

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

This could mean progression onto another qualification or a permanent role on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

Things to consider

There are some early morning and evening shifts on a rota basis – so some unsociable hours as part of this apprenticeship
