Summary
Working alongside the Senior Test Engineers and Test Manager at the Westcott space thruster test facilities. Immediate responsibilities will be primarily to act in the role of ‘B’ person to support the designated ‘A’ person during Hot Fire Testing programmes. This may involve testing at all three main Firing Sites: J-Site,Large HATF and Mini HATF.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Qualifications included:
- Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Standard. Company Training Plan & Assessment.
- BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (1 day per week for 2 years at college)
- Level 4 Diploma in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (Development Competence)
- Level 2 Functional Skills - Maths (If required)
- Level 2 Functional Skills - English (If required)
- End Point Assessment at the end of the apprenticeship (Months 36 to 39)

Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- A Min of 5 GCSE's inc Science, English & Maths (grade 4-9 (C-A*))

Other requirements
Duties will be performed in a facility requiring the frequent use of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) and chemically resistant clothing to handle potentially hazardous substances, and working with high pressure gas systems. Some work with electronics and High Voltage equipment will be required. Role will be required to pass a periodic basic medical examination. Candidate must be able to work in a safe and conscientious manner in areas with known hazards. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to work late/nightshifts, weekends and holidays. Use of PC equipment is required. Other requirements include; • Manual handling • Ability to climb ladders • Bending at waist, sitting, kneeling, climbing, walking, crouching as job may require • Ability to work outdoors in hot and cold temperatures during all weathers • Working in high noise level environments requiring hearing protection • Working around lubricants, solvents, batteries, cleaning fluids, paints, and other chemicals.
About this company
Nammo Westcott designs, manufactures and tests a range of chemical thrusters (small rockets) which are used to propel satellites into position either in the Earth’s orbit or for deep-space missions to other planets. The company also makes less powerful thrusters that control the satellite’s attitude/position during its 15 year orbit life. The company is the UK’s only space rocket thruster manufacturer and has a long history of success with many hundreds of units in use, the team has approx 30 experienced people based at Westcott which covers every aspect of space thruster engineering and production. We now seek to build the team by adding a mechanical engineering apprentice to the production team.
