What you will do in your working day

The use of navigation, bridge equipment and navigational aids.  Vessel handling and hydrodynamics, incl towage.  Weather and the effects of wind and current on vessels.  Vessel systems, incl stability, strength. Health, safety and survival tehcniques.  Planning an act of pilotage from boarding to disembarkation.

The training you will be getting

Marine pilot Apprenticeship standard:

Work based training will be provided throughout the apprenticeship, with 4 x one week periods throughout the year of Simulator training based at South Shields Marine school (accommodation will be provided).  There will also be Tutorial weeks based at Hull port, every 6 weeks with a tutor from South Shields college.

The rest of the time, you will be expected to board a number of vessels between Immingham, Goole, Grimsby and Hull and these will be signed off in your training booklet.

Level 5 Diploma in Marine Pilot Operations.
