What you will do in your working day

Tasks will vary on a daily basis and will include assisting the Grounds Team with the following:

  • Weeding, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, edging, pruning, bed preparation, planting, hedge-cutting, cross-cutting, and felling of small trees.
  • The use of hand tools and basic light machinery and plants such as mowers, strimmers, hedge-cutters, chainsaws, and leaf blowers
  • The use of the estate vehicles including RTV and ATV’s
  • To inspect the estate vehicles on a weekly and monthly basis to ensure that all are operationally sound and maintained in accordance with the maintenance schedule and inspection sheets.
  • To be aware of Health and Safety procedures and requirements, noting that all duties must be carried out to comply with current Health and Safety at Work legislation.
  • To ensure all equipment, machinery, and buildings are safely secure.
  • To keep the staffroom and tool shed clean and tidy.
  • To keep all tools and equipment clean and in good order, reporting any defects or repairs required to the Estate Manager
  • To be aware of and report any security risks posed within the estate.
  • To apply chemicals where appropriate under direction from the Head Grounds Team Member or relevantly trained operative
  • To keep the courtyards, planted areas, thoroughfares, footpaths, Estate tracks, and any other areas of the Estate clear and free from litter at all times
  • To carry out gritting, salt spreading, and snow clearing, as necessary, including footpaths throughout the village.
  • To work in line with the Ecology plan as laid out by Habitat First Group and Ecologist
  • To carry out general maintenance across the villages, ensuring that all Health and Safety implications are checked and assessed
  • To carry out your work to the highest level possible maintaining a sense of professionalism at all times whilst working on the estate.
  • To communicate with colleagues, contractors, homeowners, and guests of the estate in a respectful and professional manner at all times.
  • To report any defect or Health and Safety concerns, no matter what its nature to the General Manager and in their absence, the Assistant Manager.

The training you will be getting

Level 2 horticulture and landscape apprenticeship. Training will be conducted through workplace learning and then 1 day a week release to Lackham College.

Functional skills maths/English if required.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

By obtaining the level 2 qualification in Horticulture or Landscape Operative, this will allow you to gain the skills and knowledge to succeed within the landscaping field with specialist areas that can include arboriculture and landscape design.
