What you will do in your working day

This requires a significant amount of manual work, in a heavy engineering environment.

We recruit apprentices as a pipeline of new talent into the business who we will develop during and beyond the apprenticeship. We have apprentice-trained employees who are now in management and senior management positions.

Working in a positive and productive environment, the successful candidate will train to become a fully qualified Fitter working as part of the Engineering Team.

The duties and responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Producing components using hand-fitting techniques where required.
  • Dismantling components and equipment
  • Diagnose faults on equipment
  • Checking components for serviceability during overall activities
  • Repairing and modifying mechanical assemblies
  • Assembling mechanical components
  • Checking that completed assemblies comply with specifications

You will be required to undertake additional company training in other disciplines to further develop and complement a full skills set needed for the role.

You will also undertake "in-house" training on Company specific equipment and machinery.

The training you will be getting

One day a week at Doncaster College and four days on site, together with additional competency-based training.

You will join a structured Advanced Apprenticeship programme where you will complete Basic Engineering Training, Level 3 Technical Certificate, a Level 3 NVQ which is assessed on the job, ERR and Key/Functional Skills (where necessary).

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

The initial role, following successful completion of the course, will be that of a Mechanical Fitter at the Bogie Division, Doncaster. Future career prospects beyond that vary between staying at the Bogie Division on the shop floor or in a Technician or Engineering capacity.
