    Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00 with flexibility required. From year 2 onwards, you will be required to work flexibly across all shifts to gain a greater understanding of the operation.

What you will do in your working day

As an apprentice you will work within our Workshops alongside our qualified Vehicle Technicians learning how to complete services, inspections and repairs on heavy vehicles. 

You will complete day to day tasks faced by a technician that can range from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. 

You will be required to work independently but also operate effectively within a team. Have strong problem solving skills and a good understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of vehicle systems and associated ancillaries. 

  • Servicing and repairing any of our Commercial Vehicles
  • Maintaining a compliant and safe working environment
  • Complex problem solving techniques
  • Learning Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) engineering principles – including vehicle applications, configurations, designs, diagnostics, technologies and vehicle testing standards and maintenance schedules 
  • Learning HCV engineering practices – including inspecting, servicing, maintaining vehicles and trailers, quality checks and roadside assistance 
  • Using engineering tools and equipment – including hand and power tools, engineering and technical manuals and diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment
  • The ability to keep updates with emerging new technologies within the HV industry
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual
  • Teamwork– including effective written and verbal communication skills, working as part of a team and taking ownership and responsibility when required

*A driving licence is required to move the vehicles.

The training you will be getting

  • Training is delivered in the workplace and via seven weekly college training blocks per year at S&B's specialist Automotive Academy in Bristol over the duration of the programme
  • The apprentice will be assigned a workplace and college mentor who will offer support, advice, and guidance throughout the apprenticeship by monitoring progress via S&Bs purposely developed electronic logbook that can be accessed any time
  • Apprentices take a Gateway Assessment at the end of every year to progress until the completion of the End Point Assessment
  • Apprentices will be required to travel via train to S&B's Academy whilst on training blocks and stay in hotel accommodation, all costs for travel and accommodation including a cooked breakfast, lunch and a two-course evening meal are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you

At the end of the apprenticeship you would gain the apprenticeship qualification level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician.
