What you will do in your working day

At all times we adopt a professional and industry standard approach to decoration work.

Our painting and decorating apprentice will fill a vital role within our team, working 5 days, Monday to Friday. Their main duties and responsibilities will be to support the Painter and Decorator Lead will all decoration tasks, both planned and reactive, and assist with preparatory work in anticipation, in accordance with departmental procedures and protocols.

They will help maintain stocks of equipment and consumables and will liaise with building users to minimise the impact of redecoration work. They will also assist in the cleaning and maintenance of painting and decorating equipment  as well as College vehicles used to carry out redecoration across sites.

We would expect our apprentice to have an understanding that they would be working in a college environment and therefore of the need to maintain a professional distance from the Derby College students, staff and visitors and have an awareness of safeguarding responsibilities. Our apprentice will also be expected to support and work with the wider maintenance and estates teams as required.

There would also be an expectation that they wear college uniform and PPE at all times. Work will be carried out both inside and outside buildings and sometimes in inclement weather and appropriate protective clothing will be provided.

The training you will be getting

  • Level 2 Painter and Decorator Apprenticeship (Standard)
  • You would spend four days each week working alongside and learning from experienced professionals and once day each week completing college training.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • Following successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will have access to all approved vacancies at DCG.

Our students are the lifeblood of DCG and we exist to provide the best opportunities and outcomes for children, young people and adults. Everyone we employ must share our passion for our learning community and enable all those in it to succeed and achieve their aspirations. We employ people across a diverse range of roles and responsibilities, with some colleagues directly providing learning and support to our nursery children, our students and our apprentices; and others with a focus on supporting the running of our organisation. The DCG Maintenance Team is an established and extremely busy team of skilled individuals who work tirelessly to support and maintain the fabric of buildings across all sites. Since the painting and decorating function moved in-house, this small team has developed consistently to achieve a high standard of repair, maintenance and redecoration work to meet the expectations of its customers – staff, students and visitors.
