What you will do in your working day

Waterside Training in partnership with PepsiCo International based at Skelmersdale has a fantastic opportunity for two apprentices to join their Engineering team to support the Skelmersdale Snacks Plant Operation as an Apprentice Electrically biased Multi-skilled Shift Technician.

The Technical Engineering Apprenticeship blends college and work based technical skills training. Whilst at work you will have the opportunity to put your learning into practice with the support of knowledgeable and experienced teams. 

Over four years you will obtain a nationally recognised apprenticeship as a Science Industry Maintenance Technician.

​If you demonstrate the right level of knowledge, growth and commitment during your apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to study for a Level 4 HNC Engineering qualification in the final two years. 

You will complete your apprenticeship with a robust set of qualifications, knowledge and skills providing a strong platform to work in our production teams and develop a long-lasting career with PepsiCo. 

As a Multi-Skilled Engineering Technician you will be involved in:

  • Electrical and Mechanical activities assisting the engineering teams in various job roles
  • You will be trained in both areas assisting with preventative maintenance on electrical equipment, such as motors, control units, PLC's, sensors, instrumentation, distribution systems and switchgear
  • Assisting with preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment, such as motors, gearboxes, pumps, bearings, chain drives to conveyor belts and systems dealing with both pneumatics and hydraulic drive systems

The training you will be getting

  • Apprentices will complete a programme of both theoretical and practical learning over a four-year period. Initially, based at Waterside Training undertaking broad based training during year 1 in Electrical and Mechanical techniques before moving to a programme of working on site for a global organisation with experienced engineering technician's tackling “real life” activities
  • You will receive both vocational and academic training on and off site.
  • During the first year from September 24 to July 25 you will develop your skills and knowledge by attending Waterside Training Limited on a block release basis to carry out foundation training in Electrical and Mechanical techniques working from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with one day spent at St Helens College, Technology Campus, St Helens to attend your academic training day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Your academic training will run over the first two years from September 24 to July 26 on City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Engineering giving both academic and workshop skills
  • Additional training will also be completed during your apprenticeship to cover the requirements of the programme such as Health & Safety Training, Lean Manufacturing and or specific training as advised by the company
  • From July 25 you will commence your full site-based training at PepsiCo Skelmersdale 4 days per week with day release to Waterside Training, St Helens to continue your academic training
  • Your site-based work will follow the Level 3 Science Industries Manufacturing Technician standard and you will continue to attend your company site for the remainder of your apprenticeship programme
  • Whilst on site, dependent on the company requirements, you may work a shift pattern covering 12 hours shift pattern consisting of 4 on and 4 off including a set of night shifts
  • Through the Apprentice program candidates will also complete the following courses: 18th Edition wiring regulations, 2391Inspection and Test, Rockwell PLC and a variety of EHS and work related modules
  • Waterside will assign you a mentor/assessor to guide you through the apprenticeship and carry out six weekly reviews along with guiding you through your standards through portfolio building, behavioural logs, technical discussions, observations to check competency levels prior to embarking on the End Point Assessment

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • Apprentices that show the right attitude and effort will become fully employed as full time shift technicians with Higher Education Qualifications

Things to consider

Job specific training will be given via the apprenticeship, candidates need to meet the requirements of the selection process. Day to day activities will be working alongside and under supervision of the maintenance team whilst performing engineering related activities. You must be able to travel to both Waterside Training St Helens and PepsiCo Walkers Skelmersdale to carry out both academic and on site training.
