What you will do in your working day

The following are the core responsibilities of the Site Apprentice. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

Main purpose:

  • Maintaining clean, safe, and secure school premises, which includes buildings and grounds
  • Carrying out cleaning, handyperson activities, routine maintenance and refurbishment, porterage, and minor repairs
  • Promoting health and safety around the school.


  • Carry out daily cleaning and ad-hoc duties, such as litter picking and arranging the disposal of waste
  • Carry out emergency cleaning duties, such as gritting and cleaning up spillages

The training you will be getting

Level 2 Facilities Services Operative Apprenticeship Standard:

If the apprentice holds neither level 1 nor level 2 approved qualifications:

  • The apprentice must study towards and achieve English and maths qualifications of at least level 1 (functional skills level 1 or GCSE grade E or 2)
  • Once level 1 (functional skills level 1 or GCSE grade E or 2) is secured, apprentices must work towards level 2 English and/or maths (functional skills level 2 or GCSE) where there is time to make meaningful progress (a minimum of three months remaining prior to gateway)
  • We use a blended delivery model
  • An assessor will be required to complete observations of the apprentice on site

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • The Trust has a very successful record with its apprenticeship-training package and although not guaranteed, many apprentices have gained permanent employment at the end of their training
